The buying of a wife

Question:

Are there reports of the infallible (a.) talking about buying the wife?

Answer:

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “If one of you wants to get married, there is no problem in looking at her, because he is a buyer.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, vol. 101 page 43 Hadith 3]

نوادر الراوندي: باسناده عن موسى بن جعفر، عن آبائه عليهم السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: إذا أراد أحدكم أن يتزوج فلا بأس أن يولج بصره فإنما هو مشتر

Abu Ayyub Al-Khazzaz reported that Muhammad Ibn Muslim said: “I asked Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) about the man who wants to marry the woman: “Is he looking at her?” He said: “Yes, he buys her for the highest price.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 5 page 365 Hadith 1]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن أبي أيوب الخزاز، عن محمد ابن مسلم قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن الرجل يريد أن يتزوج المرأة أينظر إليها؟ قال: نعم إنما يشتريها بأغلا الثمن

Al-Bazanti reported that Yunus Ibn Ya’qub said: “I asked Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) about the man who wants to marry the woman: “Can he look at her?” He said: “Yes, she dresses for him in thinner robes, for he is eager to buy her for the highest price.” [Ilal-ush-Shara’i by As-Saduq, volume 2 page 500 Hadith 1]
