Wash your feet?

Abdullah Ibn Hasan reported that Abayah said: “Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) wrote a letter to Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr and the people of Egypt, in which he said: “As for the prayer washing, it belongs to the completeness of prayer. Wash your hands three times, rinse your mouth and nose three times and wash your face three times. Then wash your right hand three times up to the elbow. Then your left hand three times up to the elbow. Then wipe your head. Then wash your right foot three times. Then wash your left foot three times. I saw the Messenger (s.) perform the prayer washing in this way.” The Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The prayerwash is half of faith.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il by Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 1 Page 305 Hadith 8]

إبراهيم بن محمد الثقفي في كتاب الغارات عن عبد الله بن الحسن عن عباية قال كتب علي عليه السلام إلى محمد وأهل مصر اما بعد إلى أن قال عليه السلام ثم الوضوء فإنه من تمام الصلاة اغسل كفيك ثلاث مرات وتمضمض ثلاث مرات واستنشق ثلاث مرات واغسل وجهك ثلاث مرات ثم يدك اليمنى ثلاث مرات إلى المرفق ثم يدك الشمال ثلاث مرات إلى المرفق ثم امسح رأسك ثم اغسل رجلك اليمنى ثلاث مرات ثم اغسل رجلك اليسرى ثلاث مرات فانى رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله هكذا كان يتوضأ قال النبي صلى الله عليه وآله الوضوء نصف الايمان

Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Abi Abdillah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “If two reports come to you that differ from each other, compare them with the book of God. Whichever is compatible with the book of God, take it, and whichever is different from the book of God, return it. If you do not find both of them in the Book of Allah, compare them with the reports of the common people (Bakris). “Whichever is consistent with their reports, let that be rejected, and whichever is not consistent with their reports, let that be accepted.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 27 page 118 Hadith 29]

[1.] Goes against other narrations:

Fudail Ibn Ja’d reported that Abu Ishaq Al-Hamdani said: “The Commander of the Faithful (a.) wrote a letter to Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr in which he said: “Pay attention to the prayer washing, for it belongs to the completeness of prayer. Rinse your mouth and nose three times and wash your face. Then wash your right hand. Then your left hand. Then wipe your head and your feet. I saw that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) performed the prayer washing in this way and I know that the prayer washing is the half of faith!” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 77 page 266 Hadith 17]

مجالس أبي علي بن الشيخ: عن الشيخ، عن المفيد، عن علي ابن محمد بن حبيش، عن الحسن بن علي الزعفراني، عن إبراهيم بن محمد الثقفي عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عثمان، عن علي بن محمد بن أبي سعيد، عن فضيل بن الجعد عن أبي إسحاق الهمداني قال: كان فيما كتب أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام لمحمد بن أبي بكر: وانظر إلى الوضوء فإنه من تمام الصلاة، تمضمض ثلاث مرات واستنشق ثلاثا، واغسل وجهك ثم يدك اليمنى ثم اليسرى ثم امسح رأسك ورجليك، فاني رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يصنع ذلك، واعلم أن الوضوء نصف الايمان

Muhammad Ibn Marwan reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It may be that 60 and 70 years pass over a man and God does not accept his prayer. I said: “How could it be?” He said: “Because he washes what God told him to wipe.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3 Page 31 Hadith 9]

محمد بن يحيى، عن محمد بن الحسين، عن الحكم بن مسكين، عن محمد بن مروان قال: قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام إنه يأتي على الرجل ستون وسبعون سنة ما قبل الله منه صلاة، قلت: وكيف ذاك؟ قال: لأنه يغسل ما أمر الله بمسحه

Salim and Ghalib reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) was asked: “What about wiping of the feet? He said: “This is what the angel Gabriel (a.) was sent down with.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 1 Page 419 Hadith 4]

وعنه، عن فضالة، عن حماد بن عثمان، عن سالم، وغالب بن هذيل قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن المسح على الرجلين؟ فقال: هو الذي نزل به جبرئيل

[2.] Goes against the Book of God:

“O you who believe, when you stand up for prayer, wash your face and your hands up to the elbows and wipe your heads and your feet up to the ankles.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:6]

يا أيها الذين آمنوا إذا قمتم إلى الصلاة فاغسلوا وجوهكم وأيديكم إلى المرافق وامسحوا برءوسكم وأرجلكم إلى الكعبين

[3.] Agrees with the reports of the innovators:

Ata’ Ibn Yazid reported that Humran said: “I saw that Uthman Ibn Affan had a container brought to him. Then he poured it three times over his hands and washed them. Then he dipped his right hand into the container and rinsed his mouth and nose. Then he washed his face three times and his hands up to the elbows three times. Then he wiped his head. Then he washed his feet three times up to the ankles. Then he said that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Whoever performs my prayer washing in the following manner and then prays two bows while not engaged in any of the two inner conversations will be forgiven for his past sins.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 158]

حدثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الله الأويسي قال حدثني إبراهيم بن سعد عن ابن شهاب أن عطاء بن يزيد أخبره أن حمران مولى عثمان أخبره أنه رأى عثمان بن عفان دعا بإناء فأفرغ على كفيه ثلاث مرار فغسلهما ثم أدخل يمينه في الإناء فمضمض واستنشق ثم غسل وجهه ثلاثا ويديه إلى المرفقين ثلاث مرار ثم مسح برأسه ثم غسل رجليه ثلاث مرار إلى الكعبين ثم قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من توضأ نحو وضوئي هذا ثم صلى ركعتين لا يحدث فيهما نفسه غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه

Isma’il Ibn Umar Ibn Kathir writes: “Those among the Shi’ites who make the wiping of the two feet the same as the wiping of the shoe a duty are deviated and the most deviated, and so are those who allow both the wiping and the washing of the two, because they are also wrong. Abu Ja’far Ibn Jarir At-Tabari conveyed that the washing of the two is a duty.” [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Volume 2 Page 28]

قال إسماعيل بن عمر بن كثير: ومن أوجب من الشيعة مسحهما كما يمسح الخف، فقد ضل وأضل، وكذا من جوز مسحهما وجوز غسلهما، فقد أخطأ أيضاً، ومن نقل عن أبي جعفر بن جرير أنه أوجب غسلهما

[4.] Goes against the scholars:

Muhammad Ibn Hasan At-Tusi writes: “This report agrees with those who are not among the followers of the Imams (a.) It may have been handed down because of concealment, because the legal school of the Imams (a.) is known for wiping the feet during their ritual washing without washing the feet. This is more widespread than anyone could have any doubt about it and since the matter is in accordance with what we have already said, neither the rejection of the reports we presented nor the rejection of the Qur’an in evidence is allowed.” [Tahdhib-ul-Ahkam, Volume 1 pages 93-94]

قال محمد بن الحسن الطوسي رضي الله عنه: فهذا الخبر موافق للعامة قد ورد مورد التقية لان المعلوم من مذهب الأئمة عليهم السلام مسح الرجلين في الوضوء دون غسلهما وذلك أشهر من أن يختلج أحدا فيه الريب وإذا كان الامر على ما قلناه لم يجز ان تعارض به الاخبار التي قدمناها ولا ظاهر القرآن

Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “The community disagrees about wiping and the washing of the feet. One group is in favour of wiping and these are all our companions from the followers of the Imams (a.).” [Bihar-ul-Anwar, Volume 77, Page 247]

قال محمد باقر المجلسي رضي الله عنه: واختلفت الأمة في مسح الرجلين وغسلهما في الوضوء، فقال فرقة بالمسح وهم كافة أصحابنا الإمامية

Abu Ali At-Tabarsi writes: “There is disagreement about this. The majority of jurists say that washing is a duty and the followers of the imams (a.) say that wiping is a duty for both feet without the other.” [Majma’-ul-Bayan Fi Tafsir Al-Qur’an, Volume 3 Page 284]

قال أبو علي الطبرسي رضي الله عنه: اختلف في ذلك فقال جمهور الفقهاء إن فرضهما الغسل. وقالت الامامية فرضهما المسح دون غيره

Ash-Sharif Al-Murtada writes: “One of the things that distinguishes the followers of the Imams (a.) is the duty of wiping their feet with the moisture of their hands without drawing new water for them.” [Al-Intisar, page 114]

قال الشريف المرتضى رضي الله عنه: ومما انفردت به الإمامية وجوب مسح الرجلين ببلة اليدين من غير استئناف ماء جديد لهما
