Do not cause mischief [2:11-12]

Qur’an:

“When they are told “do not cause mischief upon the earth.” They say: We are the ones who do good. And yet they are the mischief-makers, but they know not.” [Al-Baqarah 2:11-12]

وإذا قيل لهم لا تفسدوا في الأرض قالوا إنما نحن مصلحون ألا إنهم هم المفسدون ولكن لا يشعرون

Hadith:

Hasan Al-Askari (a.) reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “When one said to those who broke the oath of allegiance on the day of Ghadir: Do not cause mischief upon the earth.” (2:11) By showing the weak servants of God the breaking of the oath of allegiance so that they might be in doubt about their faith and be confused about their ways, they said: We are those who do good, for we do not believe in the religion of Muhammad or any other religion apart from that of Muhammad. We are confused about religion and outwardly (Zahir) accept Muhammad and show the acceptance of his religion and legislation outwardly, but inwardly (Batin) we follow our desires. Therefore, we follow the pleasure and abandon it and derive our benefit from it. We free ourselves from the slavery of Muhammad and abandon obedience to Ali, the son of his uncle, because if his matter were to remain in this world forever, we would turn against him, and if his matter were to fail, we would welcome his enemies. And God said: “And yet they are the mischief-makers.” (2:12) By doing these things by themselves, for God informs His prophet (s.) of their hypocrisy and curses them and commands Muslims to curse them. Even the enemies of the believers do not trust them, because they assume that they follow hypocrisy just as they follow hypocrisy towards the companions of Muhammad. Therefore, they are not given a high rank among them and so they do not take the place of people on whom one builds his trust.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 37 Page 146 – 147 Hadith 36]

عن محمد بن محمد عن الحسن العسكري عليه السلام عن موسى الكاظم عليه السلام قال: إذا قيل لهؤلاء الناكثين للبيعة في يوم الغدير لا تفسدوا في الأرض بإظهار نكث البيعة لعباد الله المستضعفين فتشوشون عليهم دينهم وتحيرونهم في مذاهبهم قالوا إنما نحن مصلحون لأننا لا نعتقد دين محمد ولا غير دين محمد صلى الله عليه وآله ونحن في الدين متحيرون فنحن نرضى في الظاهر بمحمد بإظهار قبول دينه وشريعته، ونقضي في الباطن على شهواتنا فنتمتع ونتركه ونترفه ونعتق أنفسنا من رق محمد صلى صلى الله عليه وآله، ونكفها من طاعة ابن عمه علي، لكي إن ابد أمره في الدنيا كنا قد توجهنا عنده، وإن اضمحل أمره كنا قد سلمنا على أعدائه قال الله عز وجل: ألا إنهم هم المفسدون بما يفعلون أمور أنفسهم لان الله تعالى يعرف نبيه صلى الله عليه وآله نفاقهم، فهو يلعنهم ويأمر المسلمين بلعنهم ولا يثق بهم أيضا أعداء المؤمنين، لأنهم يظنون أنهم ينافقون أيضا كما ينافقون أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وآله، فلا يرتفع لهم عندهم منزلة، ولا يحلون عندهم محل أهل الثقة

Ali Ibn Suwaid reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “You questioned me about the two men (Abu Bakr and Umar). Both snatched from a man his possessions, which he gave to the poor and needy and travelers on the path of God. When they had both snatched it from him, they were not satisfied with their dispossession until they forced him to take it to their homes, and they continued the matter until they had squandered it in the highest degree. How much have they thereby increased in disbelief? By my life, the two of them had already fallen into hypocrisy before, and they were hostile to the Word of God, and they mocked His Messenger (s.). Both are disbelievers, God, the angels and every man curse them! By God, nothing of belief penetrated into their hearts. They were deceivers, doubters and hypocrites until they cast away the angels of punishment to the place of shame, the place of the abode.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Very authentic (Sahih).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, volume 8 page 125 Hadith 95; Mir’at-ul-Uqul of Al-Majlisi, volume 25 page 295]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن منصور الخزاعي، عن علي بن سويد، ومحمد بن يحيى، عن محمد بن الحسين عن محمد بن إسماعيل بن بزيع، عن عمه حمزة بن بزيع، عن علي بن سويد، والحسن بن محمد، عن محمد بن أحمد النهدي، عن إسماعيل بن مهران، عن محمد بن منصور، عن علي بن سويد قال: قال الإمام موسى الكاظم عليه السلام: وسألت عن رجلين (أبي بكر وعمر) اغتصبا رجلا مالا كان ينفقه على الفقراء والمساكين وأبناء السبيل وفي سبيل الله فلما اغتصباه ذلك لم يرضيا حيث غصباه حتى حملاه إياه كرها فوق رقبته إلى منازلهما فلما أحرزاه توليا إنفاقه أيبلغان بذلك كفرا؟ فلعمري لقد نافقا قبل ذلك وردا على الله عز وجل كلامه وهزئا برسوله صلى الله عليه وآله وهما الكافران عليهما لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين والله ما دخل قلب أحد منهما شئ من الايمان منذ خروجهما من حالتيها وما ازدادا إلا شكا، كانا خداعين، مرتابين، منافقين حتى توفتهما ملائكة العذاب إلى محل الخزي في دار المقام وقال محمد باقر المجلسي: في قوة الصحيح
