The speech of which you are pleased [2:204]

Qur’an:

“Among men is he whose speech about this wordly life pleases you.” [Al-Baqarah 2:204]

ومن الناس من يعجبك قوله في الحياة الدنيا

Hadith:

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “God curse (Umar) Ibn Al-Khattab, for if he would not be, then no one would engage in illegitimate intercourse, except for an unfortunate or unlucky one, because in temporary marriage there was a possibility for Muslims to get rid of illegitimate intercourse. Then he read the verse: “Among men is he whose speech about the life of this world pleases you, and God takes him as a witness for what is in his heart, while he is the most quarrelsome enemy” (2:204), and when he turns, he strives to bring destruction to the land and destroys the field and the descendants, but God does not love the destruction.” (2:205) [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 100 page 305 Hadith 11].

عن المفضل بن عمر عن جعفر بن محمد رضي الله عنهما عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: لعن الله (عمر) ابن الخطاب فلولاه ما زنى إلا شقي أو شقية لأنه كان يكون للمسلمين غناء في المتعة عن الزنا ثم تلا ومن الناس من يعجبك قوله في الحياة الدنيا ويشهد الله على ما في قلبه وهو ألد الخصام وإذا تولى سعى في الأرض ليفسد فيها ويهلك الحرث والنسل والله لا يحب الفساد

Husain Ibn Bashar reported that he asked Imam Al-Kazim (a.) about the verse: “Among men is he whose speech about this worldly life pleases you.” (2:204) He said: “This one (Abu Bakr) and that one (Umar): “And the field and the descendants will be destroyed.” (2:205) They are the children, and the field is the seed field.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 31 page 604 Hadith 52]

تفسير العياشي عن الحسين بن بشار قال سألت أبا الحسن عليه السلام عن قول الله ومن الناس من يعجبك قوله في الحياة الدنيا قال: فلان (أبو بكر) وفلان (عمر) ويهلك الحرث والنسل هم الذرية والحرث الزرع

Muhammad Tahir Al-Qummi writes: “Ibn Abi Al-Hadid reported from the greatest scholars of the majority in his commentary on Nahj-ul-Balaghah that Mu’awiyah paid 100,000 to Samurah Ibn Jundub until he handed down that this verse: “Among men is he whose speech about the life of this world pleases you, and God takes him as a witness for what is in his heart, while he is the most quarrelsome enemy” (2:204), and when he turns, he strives to bring destruction to the land and destroys the field and the descendants, but God does not love destruction.” (2:205) Was revealed about Ali (a.)” [Kitab-ul-Arba’in, pages 383 – 384]

قال محمد طاهر القمي: نقل ابن أبي الحديد من أكابر علماء الجمهور في شرحه على نهج البلاغة أن معاوية بذل لسمرة بن جندب مائة ألف حتى يروي أن هذه الآية ومن الناس من يعجبك قوله في الحياة الدنيا ويشهد الله على ما في قلبه وهو ألد الخصام وإذا تولى سعى في الأرض ليفسد فيها ويهلك الحرث والنسل والله لا يحب الفساد الآية نزلت في حق علي عليه السلام
