Die as a submissive one [3:102]

Qur’an:

“O you who believe, fear God with a true fear of Him and do not die other than those who submit themselves.” [Al Imran 3:102]

يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون

Sunnah:

Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “Fear God with true fear of Him.” (3:102) He said: “One obeys Him so that one does not disobey Him and one remembers Him so that one does not forget Him and one thanks Him so that one does not deny Him. “[Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Volume 11 page 186 Hadith 7]

عن أبي بصير: قال سألت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام عن قول الله اتقوا الله حق تقاته قال: يطاع فلا يعصى ويذكر فلا ينسى ويشكر فلا يكفر

Abd Khair reported that he asked Imam Ali (a.) about the verse: “O you who believe, fear God with a true fear of Him.” (3:102) He said: “By Allah, no one acted accordingly except the people of the house of the Messenger. We remembered God so that we would not forget Him, we thanked Him so that we would not deny Him, and we obeyed Him so that we would not disobey Him.” When this verse was sent down, the companions said: “We are not able to do this.” So God sent down: “Fear God as much as you are able.” (64:16) Waki’ said: “What you are capable of doing.” Then He said: “And listen to what you are commanded and obey. By which is meant: “Obey Allah and His Messenger and the people of His House in what they command you.” [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 3 Page 82 Hadith 2]

ابن شهر آشوب عن تفسير وكيع قال حدثنا سفيان بن مرة الهمداني عن عبد خير قال: سألت علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام عن قوله تعالى يأيها الذين امنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته قال: والله ما عمل بها غير أهل بيت رسول الله نحن ذكرنا الله فلا ننساه و نحن شكرناه فلن نكفره ونحن أطعناه فلم نعصه فلما نزلت هذه الآية قالت الصحابة: لا نطيق ذلك فأنزل الله تعالى فٱتقوا الله ما استطعتم قال وكيع: ما أطقتم ثم قال: واسمعوا ما تؤمرون به وأطيعوا يعني أطيعوا الله و رسوله و أهل بيته فيما يأمرونكم به

Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “Fear God with true fear of Him.” (3:102) He said: “Abrogated.” I said: “What has abrogated it?” He said: “The statement of God: “Fear God as much as you can.” (64:16) [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, volume 1 page 194 Hadith 121]

عن أبي بصير قال: سألت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام عن قول الله اتقوا الله حق تقاته قال: منسوخة قلت: وما نسختها؟ قال: قول الله: اتقوا الله ما استطعتم

Al-Husain Ibn Khalid reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “How to read this verse: “O you who believe, fear God with a true fear of Him, and do not die any other way than the one who is submitting himself?” (3:102) I said: ” Those who submit.” He said: “Praise be to God, God gives them the title of faith (Iman) and calls them believers. Then He titles them with the title of submission (Islam)? Faith is one step above submission.” I said: “This is how one reads it according to the reading of Zaid.” He said: “According to the reading of Ali (a.), which was sent down from Gabriel (a.) to Muhammad (s.), it says only this: “And do not die in any other way than those who are submissive to the Messenger of God and the Imams after him.” [Al-Qira’at from As-Sayyari, page 34 page 120]

هارون بن الجهم عن الحسين بن خالد عن الإمام الكاظم عليه السلام قال: كيف تقرأ هذه الآية يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقو الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون؟ قلت: مسلمون قال: سبحان الله يوقع الله عليهم اسم الإيمان ويسميهم مؤمنين ثم يسميهم بالإسلام؟ والإيمان فوق الإسلام بدرجة قلت: هكذا يقرأ في قراءة زيد قال: إنما هي في قراءة علي عليه السلام وهو التنزيل الذي نزل به جبرئيل على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله: إلا وأنتم مسلمون لرسول الله والأئمة من بعده

Al-Husain Ibn Khalid reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: “How to read this verse: “O you who believe, fear God with true fear of Him and do not die any other way than those who submit themselves.”(3:102) I said: “Submit themselves.” I said: “Submitters.” He said: “Praise be to God, He titles them with faith (iman) that you may call them believers. Then He calls them to submission (Islam), whereas faith is above submission?” I said:”This is how one reads it according to the reading of Zaid.” He said: “According to the reading of Ali (a.), which was sent down from Gabriel (a.) to Muhammad (s.), it only reads as follows: “And do not die in any other way than those who are submissive to the Messenger of God. Then to the Imam after him.” [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, Volume 1 Page 193 – 194 Hadith 119]

عن محمد بن مسعود عن الحسين بن خالد عن الإمام الكاظم عليه السلام قال: كيف تقرأ هذه الآية يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن الا وأنتم مسلمون ماذا؟ قلت: مسلمون فقال: سبحان الله توقع عليهم الايمان فسميتهم مؤمنين ثم يسئلهم الاسلام، والايمان فوق الاسلام؟ قلت: هكذا يقرأ في قراءة زيد قال إنما هي في قراءة علي عليه السلام وهو التنزيل الذي نزل به جبرئيل على محمد عليهما الصلاة والسلام الا وأنتم مسلمون لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله ثم الامام من بعده
