Did Abdullah Ibn Saba’ exist?

Abdullah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said:“We, the people of the house are truthful. We are not saved from a liar who lies about us and through whose lie people lose sight of our truthfulness. The Prophet Muhammad (s.) had the most truthful tongue among the people and was the truthful creature, while Musailmah used to lie. The Commander of the Believers (a.) was the most truthful one whom God created after the Messenger (s.) and the one who used to lie about him and reject his truthfulness and make up lies about God was Abdullah Ibn Saba’.” [Ikhtiyar Ma’rifat Ar-Rijal of At-Tusi, Volume 1 Page 324 Hadith 174]

وبهذا الاسناد عن محمد بن خالد الطيالسي، عن ابن أبي نجران عن عبد الله قال قال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام انا أهل بيت صديقون لا نخلو من كذاب يكذب علينا ويسقط صدقنا بكذبه علينا عند الناس، كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أصدق الناس لهجة وأصدق البرية، وكان مسيلمة يكذب وكان أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام أصدق من برأ الله بعد رسول الله، وكان الذي يكذب عليه ويعمل في تكذيب صدقه ويفترى على الله الكذب عبد الله بن سبأ

Aban Ibn Uthman reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “May God curse Abdullah Ibn Saba’ for attributing lordship to the Commander of the Faithful (a.), though, by God, he was only an obedient servant of God. Woe to him who lies about us! A group says about us what we do not say about ourselves. We renounce them by God, we renounce them by God.” [Ikhtiyar Ma’rifat Ar-Rijal of At-Tusi, Volume 1 Page 324 Hadith 172]

حدثني محمد بن قولويه، قال: حدثني سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا يعقوب بن يزيد ومحمد بن عيسى، عن علي بن مهزيار، عن فضالة بن أيوب الأزدي عن أبان بن عثمان، قال سمعت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام يقول: لعن الله عبد الله بن سبأ أنه ادعى الربوبية في أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وكان والله أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام عبدا لله طائعا، الويل لمن كذب علينا وأن قوما يقولون فينا ما لا نقوله في أنفسنا، نبرأ إلى الله منهم نبرأ إلى الله منهم

Abu Hamzah Ath-Thumali reported that Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “May God curse him who lies about us! I thought of Abdullah Ibn Saba’, with every hair on my body standing up, because he claimed a mighty thing that was not his, God curse him! Ali (a.) was a pious servant of God. He attained the glory of God not other than by obedience to God and His Messenger, and the Messenger (s.) attained the glory of God not other than by obedience to God.” [Ikhtiyar Ma’rifat Ar-Rijal of At-Tusi, Volume 1 Page 324 Hadith 173]

وبهذا الاسناد، عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن ابن أبي عمير وأحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن أبيه والحسين بن سعيد، عن ابن أبي عمير عن هشام بن سالم، عن أبي حمزة الثمالي، قال، قال علي بن الحسين عليهما السلام لعن الله من كذب علينا، اني ذكرت عبد الله بن سبأ فقامت كل شعرة في جسدي، لقد ادعى أمرا عظيما ماله لعنه الله، كان علي عليه السلام والله عبدا لله صالحا، أخو رسول الله، ما نال الكرامة من الله الا بطاعته لله ولرسوله، وما نال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم الكرامة من الله الا بطاعته لله

Ibn Abi Umair reported that Hisham Ibn Salim said: “I heard Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) telling his companions about Abdullah Ibn Saba’ and what he attributed to the Commander of the Believers (a.) in terms of lordship. Then he said: “When he claimed this about him, the Commander of the Believers (a.) asked him to repent, but he refused to repent. So he burned him with fire.” [Ikhtiyar Ma’rifat Ar-Rijal of At-Tusi, Volume 1 Page 323 Hadith 171]

حدثني محمد بن قولويه، قال: حدثني سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا يعقوب بن يزيد ومحمد بن عيسى، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن سالم، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام يقول وهو يحدث أصحابه بحديث عبد الله بن سبأ وما ادعى من الربوبية في أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب، فقال: انه لما ادعى ذلك فيه استتابه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام فأبي أن يتوب فأحرقه بالنار

Sinan reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “Abdullah Ibn Saba’ claimed to be a prophet and claimed that the commander of the believers (a.) was God (Allah), Who is highly exalted above. The news of this came to the Commander of the Believers (a.) and he called him to himself. Abdullah Ibn Saba’ confessed and said: “Yes, it is you and i have been enlightened that you are God (Allah) and i am a prophet.” Then the Imam (a.) said to him: “Woe unto you, Satan has made a mockery of you, turn back from it, may your mother lose you and and may you perish!” But he refused, so he took him into custody and asked him to repent for three days, but he did not repent. After that he burned him with fire and said: “Satan deceived him. He used to come to him and inspire him.” [Ikhtiyar Ma’rifat Ar-Rijal of At-Tusi, Volume 1 Page 323 Hadith 170]

حدثني محمد بن قولويه القمي، قال: حدثني سعد بن عبد الله بن أبي خلف القمي، قال: حدثني بن عثمان العبدي، عن يونس بن عبد الرحمن، عن عبد الله بن سنان، قال: حدثني أبي، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام ان عبد الله بن سبأ كان يدعى النبوة ويزعم أن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام هو الله تعالى عن ذلك فبلغ ذلك أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام فدعاه وسأله؟ فأقر بذلك وقال نعم أنت هو، وقد كان ألقي في روعي أنك أنت الله وأني نبي. فقال له أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: ويلك قد سخر منك الشيطان فارجع عن هذا ثكلتك أمك وتب، فأبى فحبسهه أيام فلم يتب، فأحرقه بالنار وقال: ان الشيطان استهواه، فكان يأتيه ويلقى في روعه ذلك
