Prohibition of peacock meat

Question:

Is the meat of peacocks allowed for consumption in Islam?

Answer:

Sulaiman Al-Ja’fari reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “Neither the peacock nor its eggs are allowed to be eaten.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 245 Hadith 9]

عدة من أصحابنا عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد عن بكر بن صالح عن سليمان الجعفري عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: الطاؤوس لا يحل أكله ولا بيضه

Al-Husain Ibn Khalid reported that he asked Imam Al-Kazim (a.): “Is it allowed to eat the meat of the elephant? He said: “No.” I said: “Why?” He said: “Because it is a cautionary example, and God has forbidden the flesh of those who are transformed, and also the flesh of those who resemble them in form.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 245 Hadith 4]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن عمرو بن عثمان، عن الحسين بن خالد قال قلت لأبي الحسن يعني موسى بن جعفر عليه السلام: أيحل أكل لحم الفيل؟ فقال: لا، قلت: ولم؟ قال عليه السلام: لأنه مثلة وقد حرم الله عز وجل الامساخ ولحم ما مثل به في صورها

Sulaiman Al-Ja’fari reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “The peacock is a transformed one. He was a man of beautiful appearance, whereupon he embraced the wife of a believing man who loved him and made love to her. Afterwards they exchanged letters and God transformed them into two peacocks, a female and a male, and neither one eats his flesh nor his eggs.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 247 Hadith 16]

عدة من أصحابنا عن أحمد بن محمد عن بكر بن صالح عن سليمان الجعفري عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: الطاؤوس مسخ كان رجلا جميلا فكابر امرأة رجل مؤمن تحبه فوقع بها ثم راسلته بعد فمسخهما الله عز وجل طاؤوسين أنثى وذكرا ولا يؤكل لحمه ولا بيضه
