Return of the Imams

Question:

Are there reports that the imams (a.) return after their deaths?

Answer:

Salman reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said to Fatimah (a.): “You are the mistress of the wives of the people of Paradise and Hasan and Husain are the masters of the youth of the people of Paradise. I and your husband and the guardians authorized by me until the Day of Resurrection are all guides and the rightly guided (Mahdi). The first of the authorized guardians after me is my brother Ali. Then Al-Hasan, then Al-Husain and then nine descendants of Al-Husain who are on my level and in Paradise, no level is closer to God than my level and the level of my brother.” [Hilyat-ul-Abrar of Al-Bahrani, Volume 2 Page 400 – 401]

ابن بابويه، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن الوليد، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن حماد بن عيسى، عن عمر ابن أذينة، عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن إبراهيم بن عمر اليماني، عن سليم ابن قيس الهلالي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال لفاطمة عليها السلام: وأنت سيدة نساء أهل الجنة وابناك حسن وحسين سيدا شباب أهل الجنة، وأنا وبعلك وأوصيائي إلى يوم القيامة كلهم هادون مهديون، أول الأوصياء بعدي أخي على، ثم الحسن، ثم الحسين، ثم تسعة من ولد الحسين في درجتي وليس في الجنة درجة أقرب إلى الله من درجتي ودرجة أخي

Abdullah Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Proclaim the good news that the days of the tyrants are doomed. Then, after them, the bringer of salvation (Jabir) will appear, through whom God will make the community of Muhammad (s.) better: the rightly guided (Mahdi). Then the Supported one (Mansur), and after that a number of Imams who are the rightly guided (Mahdi).” [Sharh-ul-Akhbar of Al-Maghribi, Volume 3, Page 400 Hadith 1283]

عن النعمان بن محمد عن يحيى بن السلام عن عبد الله بن عمر عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم أنه قال: أشروا فيوشك أيام الجبارين أن تنقطع ثم يكون بعدهم الجابر الذي يجبر الله به أمة محمد صلى الله عليه وآله المهدي ثم المنصور ثم عدد أئمة مهديين

Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Salit reported that Imam Al-Husain (a.) said: “Of us there are twelve rightly guided (Mahdi). The first of them is the Commander of the Faithful, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, and the last of them is the Ninth of my descendants and he is the Imam rising with the Truth.” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, page 317 Hadith 3]

حدثنا أحمد بن زياد بن جعفر الهمداني قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن عبد السلام بن صالح الهروي قال: أخبرنا وكيع بن الجراح، عن الربيع بن سعد، عن عبد الرحمن بن سليط قال: قال الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام منا اثنا عشر مهديا أولهم أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب، وآخرهم التاسع من ولدي، وهو الإمام القائم بالحق

Hasan Ibn Sulaiman reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whoever does not believe in our return and in our temporary marriage does not belong to us.” [Al-Muhtadar of Al-Hilli, page 33]

عن حسن بن سليمان عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: ليس منا من لم يؤمن برجعتنا ويقر بمتعتنا

The twelve rightly guided imams (a.) should not be confused with the twelve rightly guided followers of the imam (a.) [here!]
