Prohibition of rabbit meat

Question:

Is the meat of rabbits allowed for consumption in Islam?

Answer:

Hammad Ibn Uthman reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) was of a restrained nature and he used to detest something without declaring it forbidden. When the rabbit was brought to him, he detested it, but he himself did not declare it forbidden.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 16 Page 319 Hadith 21]

وعنه عن ابن أبي عمير عن حماد بن عثمان عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله عزوف النفس وكان يكره الشئ ولا يحرمه فأتي بالأرنب فكرهها ولم يحرمها

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The Messenger (s.) disliked the eating of the meat of the rabbit, lizard, horses and mules, but not with a prohibition like the prohibition of the dead, blood and pork.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 16 Page 319 Hadith 20]

Al-Hurr Al-Amili writes: “The meaning of this may be that the rabbit and the lizard are both prohibited, but their ban in terms of severity is below the prohibition of dead animals. This is advocated by the scholar (At-Tusi) and others besides him consider it possible that its a statement which is said in caution (Taqiyyah).” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 16 page 319]

قال الحر العاملي: هذا محمول على أن الأرنب والضب محرمان ولكن تحريمهما دون تحريم الميتة في التغليظ قاله الشيخ (الطوسي) وغيره ويحتمل الحمل على التقية

Muhammad Ibn Sinan reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “The rabbit was prohibited because it is on the level of the tomcat and it has claws like the claws of the tomcat and the predators, while digging its tunnel with its impurity in itself, and because of the blood that comes out of it, as is the case with women, because it has been transformed.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, volume 16 page 315 – 316 Hadith 11]

وفي عيون الأخبار وفي العلل بأسانيد تأتى في آخر الكتاب عن محمد بن سنان عن الرضا عليه السلام فيما كتب إليه من جواب مسائله في العلل وحرم الأرنب لأنها بمنزلة السنور ولها مخاليب كمخاليب السنور وسباع الوحش فجرت مجراها مع قذرها في نفسها وما يكون منها من الدم كما يكون من النساء لأنها مسخ

Al-Husain Ibn Khalid reported that he asked Imam Al-Kazim (a.): “Is it allowed to eat the meat of the elephant?” He said: “No.” I said: “Why?” He said: “Because it is a disfigurement and God has forbidden the flesh of those who are transformed and also the flesh of those who resemble them in form.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 24 page 104 Hadith 2]

وعنه، عن أبيه، عن عمرو بن عثمان، عن الحسين بن خالد، قال: قلت لأبي الحسن عليه السلام: أيحل اكل لحم الفيل؟ فقال: لا، فقلت: لم؟ قال: لأنه مثلة، وقد حرم الله لحوم الأمساخ ولحم ما مثل به في صورها

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “I asked the Prophet Muhammad (s.) about the transformed. Then he said: “They are thirteen, and among them are the elephant, the bear, the pig, the monkey, the eel, the lizard, the bat, the triop, the scorpion, the spider, the rabbit, and the canopus, and the Venus.” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, Volume 16 Page 316 – 317 Hadith 13]

وعن علي بن أحمد الأسواري عن مكي بن أحمد بن سعدويه البردعي عن زكريا بن يحيى العطار عن القلانسي عن عبد العزيز بن عبد الله عن علي بن جعفر عن معتب عن جعفر بن محمد عن آبائه عن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام قال: سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله عن المسوخ فقال: هم ثلاثة عشر الفيل والدب والخنزير والقرد والجريث والضب والوطواط والدعموص والعقرب والعنكبوت والأرنب وسهيل والزهرة
