Abu Hurairah the enemy of God

Did Umar declare the companion Abu Hurairah as an enemy of God?

Answer:

Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “No man ascribes himself to anyone other than his father, while being aware of it except that he becomes a disbeliever. He who claims what he is not entitled to, does not belong to us and is assured of his place in the fire of hell. Whoever calls a man disbelieving or says: “Enemy of God!” Although it is not so, then it returns back to himself.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 61]

وحدثني زهير بن حرب حدثنا عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث حدثنا أبي حدثنا حسين المعلم عن ابن بريدة عن يحيى بن يعمر أن أبا الأسود حدثه عن أبي ذر أنه سمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول ليس من رجل ادعى لغير أبيه وهو يعلمه إلا كفر ومن ادعى ما ليس له فليس منا وليتبوأ مقعده من النار ومن دعا رجلا بالكفر أو قال عدو الله وليس كذلك إلا حار عليه

Muhammad Ibn Sirin reported that Abu Hurairah said: “Umar said to me: “O enemy of God and enemy of Islam, you have cheated on the property of God!” I said: “Neither am i an enemy of God nor am i an enemy of Islam, but only an enemy of their enemies. I did not cheat on the property of God. Rather, the cost of my camel and of arrows has increased.” He said: “Give it back to me!” But i repeated these words to him. He then fined me 12,000. When i was in the midday prayer, i said: “O God, forgive the commander of the faithful!” Afterwards he asked me to become active, but i refused, so he said: “Why? Didn’t Joseph himself ask to become active, and he was better than you?” I said: “Joseph is a prophet and the son of a prophet, which was the son of a prophet, while i am the son of Umaimah and have a fear at the three and the two.” Umar said: “Or do you not say five?” I said: “No.” He said: “What are they?” I said: “I am afraid to speak without knowledge and to give information without knowledge, and to have my back slapped and my honor insulted and my fortune taken away with blows.” Al-Hakim An-Naisaburi writes:“According to the condition of the two scholars, this tradition has a chain that is authentic (Sahih), but they have not published it.” Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “It meets the condition of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim.” [Al-Mustadrak Ala As-Sahihain, Volume 2 Page 378 Hadith 3327]

أخبرني أبو بكر محمد بن أحمد المزكي بمرو، ثنا عبد الله بن روح المدايني، ثنا يزيد بن هارون، أنبأ هشام بن حسان، عن محمد بن سيرين، عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال لي عمر يا عدو الله وعدو الإسلام خنت مال الله، قال: قلت: لست عدو الله، ولا عدو الإسلام، ولكني عدو من عاداهما، ولم أخن مال الله، ولكنها أثمان إبلي وسهام اجتمعت. قال: فأعادها علي وأعدت عليه هذا الكلام، قال: فغرمني اثني عشر ألفا، قال: فقمت في صلاة الغداة فقلت: اللهم اغفر لأمير المؤمنين فلما كان بعد ذلك أرادني على العمل، فأبيت عليه، فقال: ولم وقد سأل يوسف العمل وكان خيرا منك؟ فقلت: إن يوسف نبي، ابن نبي، ابن نبي، ابن نبي، وأنا ابن أميمة وأنا أخاف ثلاثا واثنتين قال: أولا تقول خمسا؟ قلت: لا قال: فما هن؟ قلت: أخاف أن أقول بغير علم، وأن أفتي بغير علم، وأن يضرب ظهري، وأن يشتم عرضي، وأن يؤخذ مالي بالضرب. قال الحاكم النيسابوري: هذا حديث بإسناد صحيح على شرط الشيخين ولم يخرجاه وقال الذهيب: على الشرط البخاري ومسلم

Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Adh-Dhahabi writes: “Some of the companions have declared each other to be disbelievers because of interpretations, but God is pleased with each one and forgives them because they are not infallible.” [Ar-Ruwat-uth-Thiqat, page 23]

قال محمد بن أحمد الذهبي: فبعض الصحابة كفّر بعضهم بتأويل ما, والله يرضى عن الكل ويغفر لهم, فما هم بمعصومين
