Inhabitant of hell strengthens Islam

Question:

Do the innovators report that a companion of the Prophet (s.) fought for Islam and went to hell as a result?

Answer:

Sa’id Ibn Al-Musayyib reported that Abu Hurairah said: “We participated in campaigns with the Prophet Muhammad (s.). Then he said about a man who professed Islam, “This man is an inhabitant of hellfire. When the fight began, the man fought a great deal, so he was wounded. Therefore, it was said: “O Messenger of God, the one about whom you said that he is an inhabitant of hell, fought extensively and died today.” He said: “Into hellfire with him!” Some people doubted while they were there, because it was said: “He did not die, but was only badly wounded.” When night fell, he couldn’t stand the wounds and took his own life. After the Prophet Muhammad (s.) was informed of this, he said: “God is greater, i testify that i am a servant of God and His Messenger. Then he ordered Bilal to proclaim to the people: “No one enters paradise except a Muslim. God will strengthen this religion through the wicked evildoer!” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 2897]

حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري ح وحدثني محمود بن غيلان حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن الزهري عن ابن المسيب عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال شهدنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال لرجل ممن يدعي الإسلام هذا من أهل النار فلما حضر القتال قاتل الرجل قتالا شديدا فأصابته جراحة فقيل يا رسول الله الذي قلت له إنه من أهل النار فإنه قد قاتل اليوم قتالا شديدا وقد مات فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى النار قال فكاد بعض الناس أن يرتاب فبينما هم على ذلك إذ قيل إنه لم يمت ولكن به جراحا شديدا فلما كان من الليل لم يصبر على الجراح فقتل نفسه فأخبر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بذلك فقال الله أكبر أشهد أني عبد الله ورسوله ثم أمر بلالا فنادى بالناس إنه لا يدخل الجنة إلا نفس مسلمة وإن الله ليؤيد هذا الدين بالرجل الفاجر

Sa’id Ibn Al-Musayyib reported that Abu Hurairah said: “We participated with the Prophet Muhammad (s.) in the campaign of Khaibar. Then he said about a man who accompanied him and professed Islam: “He is one of the inhabitants of hellfire.” When the fight began, the man fought a lot so that he was wounded and stabbed. Therefore, a man among the companions of the Prophet (s.) said: “O Messenger of Allah, i saw the man about whom you said that he was among the inhabitants of hellfire, fighting extensively, so that he received numerous wounds.” He said: “Yet he is among the inhabitants of hellfire.” Some Muslims began to doubt this. While he was in this state, he felt the pain from the wounds, so he put his hand in his quiver and pulled out an arrow by which he took his own life. Then a man among the Muslims came up to the Prophet (s.) in anger and said: “O Messenger of Allah, your statement has been found to be confirmed. He committed suicide and took his own life.” The Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O Bilal, arise and proclaim that no one but a believer enters Paradise and that God strengthens this religion through the vicious evildoer!” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6144]

حدثنا حبان بن موسى، أخبرنا عبد الله، أخبرنا معمر، عن الزهري، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، قال: شهدنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خيبر، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لرجل ممن معه يدعي الإسلام: هذا من أهل النار فلما حضر القتال: قاتل الرجل من أشد القتال وكثرت به الجراح فأثبتته، فجاء رجل من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: يا رسول الله، أرأيت الرجل الذي تحدثت أنه من أهل النار قد قاتل في سبيل الله من أشد القتال، فكثرت به الجراح، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: أما إنه من أهل النار فكاد بعض المسلمين يرتاب، فبينما هو على ذلك، إذ وجد الرجل ألم الجراح فأهوى بيده إلى كنانته فانتزع منها سهما فانتحر بها، فاشتد رجال من المسلمين إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقالوا: يا رسول الله، صدق الله حديثك، قد انتحر فلان فقتل نفسه، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: يا بلال، قم فأذن لا يدخل الجنة إلا مؤمن، وإن الله ليؤيد هذا الدين بالرجل الفاجر

Abdullah Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O God, strengthen Islam through one of the two men you prefer: “Abu Jahl or Umar Ibn Al-Khattab.” He said: “And Umar was preferred by both.” Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Sahih At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2907]

عن ابن عمر أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال اللهم أعز الإسلام بأحب هذين الرجلين إليك بأبي جهل أو بعمر بن الخطاب قال وكان أحبهما إليه عمر. وقال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: صحيح
