Preference of man over the angels through his intellect

Ahmad Ibn Ali reported that Imam Al-Askari (a.) said: “The hypocrites questioned the Prophet (s.) whereupon they said: “O Messenger of God, teach us about Ali. Is he more excellent or an angel close to God?” Then the Messenger of God said: ” So were the angels honored except by their love for Muhammad and Ali and their acceptance of their leadership? None of the lovers of Ali has cleansed his heart of the filth of deception, corruption, resentment, and the uncleanness of sins, except that he is purer and more excellent than the angels.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 26, Page 338, Hadith 4]

أحمد بن علي بن أبي طالب الطبرسي عن الحسن بن علي العسكري عليهما السلام قال: سأل المنافقون النبي صلى الله عليه وآله فقالوا: يا رسول الله أخبرنا عن علي عليه السلام هو أفضل أم ملائكة الله المقربون فقال رسول الله وهل شرفت الملائكة إلا بحبها لمحمد وعلي وقبولها لولايتهما إنه لا أحد من محبي علي عليه السلام نظف قلبه من قذر الغش والدغل والغل ونجاسة الذنوب إلا كان أطهر وأفضل من الملائكة

Abdullah Ibn Sinan reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Are the angels more excellent or the children of Adam?” Whereupon he said: “The Commander of the Faithful (a.) said: “God provided the angels with an intellect without lust and He provided the animals with lust without intellect and He provided the children of Adam with both. In whom his intellect outweighed his lust, he is better than the angels, and in whom his lust outweighed his intellect, he is worse than the animals.” [Al-Fusul-ul-Muhimmah of Al-Amili, Volume 1, Page 118, Hadith 9]

محمد بن علي عن علي بن الحسين بن بابويه عن سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن علي بن الحكم عن عبد الله بن سنان عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليهما السلام أنه سأله: الملائكة أفضل أم بنو آدم فقال قال أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام: إن الله ركب في الملائكة عقلا بلا شهوة وركب في البهائم شهوة بلا عقل وركب في بني آدم كلتيهما فمن غلب عقله شهوته فهو خير من الملائكة ومن غلب شهوته عقله فهو شر من البهائم

Ali Ibn Muhammad reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The intelligent one is the one who disobeyed his lust in obedience to his Lord.” [Uyun-ul-Hikam of Al-Wasiti, page 23, Hadith 1]

علي بن محمد الليثي عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام قال: العاقل من عصى هواه في طاعة ربه

Sa’id Ibn Hibatillah reported that Imam Al-Askari (a.) said: “None of the lovers of Ali cleansed his heart of the filth of deception, corruption and resentment and the impurity of sins, except that he is purer and more excellent than the angels.” [Qisas-ul-Anbiya’ by Al-Jaza’iri, page 39, hadith 2]

سعيد بن هبة الله الراوندي عن الحسن بن علي العسكري عليهما السلام قال: إنه لا أحد من محبي علي عليه السلام نظف قلبه من قذر الغش والدغل والغل ونجاسة الذنوب إلا لكان أطهر وأفضل من الملائكة
