Honor as a widow?

Question:

Is it true that Imam Ali (a.) in the 156th sermon of Nahj-ul-Balaghah continued to give A’ishah the honor of being the widow and wife of the Prophet (s.)?

Answer:

In the popular translation it says: “After (all) this (nevertheless) she deserves her original honor (as the widow of the Prophet).” [Nahj-ul-Balaghah of Ar-Radi, Volume 2 Page 48 Sermon No. 156]

But in Arabic, it says:

ولها بعد حرمتها الأولى

“And she still has her previous hurmah.” [Nahj-ul-Balaghah of Ar-Radi, Volume 2 Page 48 Sermon No. 156]

The word “Hurmah” (حُرمة) means something like ” prohibition” or “integrity.”

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The women among the Protected (people of the book) do not have Hurmah, so one can look at their hair and hands.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 524 Hadith 1]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن النوفلي، عن السكوني، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: لا حرمة لنساء أهل الذمة أن ينظر إلى شعورهن وأيديهن

Besides the linguistic aspect there is also the fact that A’ishah broke the marriage contract with the messenger (s.) through her rebellion, which negated her status as a wife.

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O Ali, you are my representative for the dead and the living people of my house and for my wives. Those whom you confirm will meet me tomorrow and those whom you divorce, i have nothing to do with them. She will not see me in the forecourt of the resurrection, nor will i see her.” [Al-Ghaibah of At-Tusi, page 150 hadith 111]

أخبرنا جماعة عن أبي عبد الله الحسين بن علي بن سفيان البزوفري عن علي بن سنان الموصلي العدل عن علي بن الحسين عن أحمد بن محمد بن الخليل عن جعفر بن أحمد المصري عن عمه الحسن بن علي عن أبيه عن أبي عبد الله جعفر بن محمد عن أبيه الباقر عن أبيه ذي الثفنات سيد العابدين عن أبيه الحسين الزكي الشهيد عن أبيه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: يا علي أنت وصيي على أهل بيتي حيهم وميتهم وعلى نسائي: فمن ثبتها لقيتني غدا ومن طلقتها فأنا برئ منها لم ترني ولم أرها في عرصة القيامة

Muhammad Ibn Hasan (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “O Abu l-Hasan, this privilege remains only as long as they obey God. So if any of the wives after me disobey God by fighting against you, divorce them and deprive them of the privilege of being the Mothers of the Believers.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 32 page 268 Hadith 207]

عن أحمد بن علي عن سعد بن عبد الله عن محمد بن الحسن عليهما السلام عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قال: يا أبا الحسن إن هذا شرف باق ما دمن لله على طاعة فأيتهن عصت الله بعدي في الأزواج بالخروج عليك فطلقها وأسقطها من شرف أمهات المؤمنين
