Ten Promised of Paradise?

Was paradise promised to Abu Bakr and Umar and eight other people?

Answer:

Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Know that the evidence for the falsehood of the tradition about the ten companions to whom Paradise was promised is numerous and Imam Ali (a.) denied it and confronted its falsehood. Some of them fought with the rest against Ali (a.), which is a proof of the falsity of the tradition and was transmitted by the numerous reports between the two groups in which the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said to Ali (a.): “No one is angry with you except a hypocrite.” And he also said: “Whoever wages war against you wages war against me.” And other such statements, which will appear in the ninth volume. As for the ten Companions, all of whom are said to have been promised paradise, they claim that they are Ali (a.), Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Talhah, Az-Zubair, Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqas, Sa’id Ibn Zaid Ibn Amr Ibn Nufail, Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Awf and Abu Ubaidah Amir Ibn Abdillah Ibn Al-Jarrah, may God curse the nine.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar, Volume 32, Page 217]

قال محمد باقر المجلسي: واعلم أن الدلائل على بطلان ما ادعوا من ورود الحديث ببشارة العشرة انهم من أهل الجنة كثيرة قد مر بعضها وكفى بإنكاره عليه السلام ورده في بطلانه، ومقاتلة بعضهم معه عليه السلام أدل دليل على بطلانه للأخبار المتواترة بين الفريقين عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله كقوله عليه السلام: لا يبغضك إلا منافق ” وقوله: ” حربك حربي ” وغير ذلك مما مر وسيأتي في المجلد التاسع، والعشرة بزعمهم أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وأبو بكر وعمر وعثمان وطلحة والزبير وسعد بن أبي وقاص وسعيد بن زيد بن عمرو بن نفيل العدوي وعبد الرحمان بن عوف وأبو عبيدة عامر بن عبد الله بن الجراح على التسعة اللعنة

Umar Ibn Shimr reported from Jabir that Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) said: “Ali (a.) stood in the battle of the camels before Talhah and Az-Zubair and preached a sermon to them. He said: “The keepers of knowledge from the family of Muhammad (s.) and the companions of Aishah, the daughter of Abu Bakr, have already been informed by the tongue of the Prophet (s.) that the companions of the camel are cursed and those who invent lies only experience disappointment.” Then Talhah said to him: “You claim that we are cursed even though the Messenger of God (s.) said that paradise was promised to ten of his companions?” Ali (a.) replied: “This tradition of Sa’id Ibn Zaid Ibn Nufail originated during the reign of Uthman. So, tell me the ten companions.” He was then given nine companions, but they left out one companion. Ali (a.) said to them: “And what about the tenth companion?” They answered: “This is you.” Ali (a.) said: “God is greater than any descriptive power! As for you, you have testified that Paradise was promised to me, but as for me, i am among those who deny your promise. By Him Who split the grain and created the Breath for the Covenant of the Prophet of the Mother of the Cities (s.) with me, in the Fire of Hell is a Well in which six of the former and six of the latter whom you named are kept, and on the top of this Well is a stone. If God wills it, He will kindle the fire of hell for its inhabitants and commands that stone to rise and under it are some of those you mentioned. If it should not be so, may God grant you victory over me, and if it should be true, may God grant me victory over you and kill you through those of my followers whom you would have killed.” [Al-Kafa’ah of Al-Mufid, page 24 – 25 Hadith 24]

عن عمر بن شمر عن جابر عن أبي جعفر محمد بن علي – عليه السلام – كأن أمير المؤمنين واقف طلحة والزبير في يوم الجمل وخاطبهما، فقال في كلامه لهما: لقد علم المستحفظون من آل محمد – وفي حديث آخر: من أصحاب عائشة ابنة أبي بكر وها هي ذه فاسألوها – أن أصحاب الجل ملعونون على لسان النبي – صلى الله عليه وآله -، وقد خاب من افترى فقال له طلحة: سبحان الله! تزعم أنا ملعونون وقد قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و: عشرة من أصحابي في الجنة. فقال أمير المؤمنين – عليه السلام -: هذا حديث سعيد بن زيد بن نفيل في ولاية عثمان، سموا لي العشرة؟ قال: فسموا تسعة وأمسكوا عن واحد. فقال لهم: فمن العاشر؟ قالوا: أنت. قال: الله أكبر، أما أنتم فقد شهدتم لي أني من أهل الجنة وأنا بما قلتما من الكافرين، والذي فلق الحبة وبرأ النسمة لعهد النبي الأمي – صلى الله عليه وآله – إلي: أن في جهنم جبا فيه ستة [من الأولين وستة] سمن الآخرين، على رأس ذلك الجب صخرة إذا أراد الله تعالى أن يسعر جهنم على أهلها أمر بتلك الصخرة فرفعت، إن فيهم – أو معهم – لنفرا ممن ذكرتم، وإلا فأظفركم الله بي، وإلا فأظفرني الله بكما وقتلكما بمن قلتما من شيعتي

Aban Ibn Abi Ayyash reported that Sulaim Ibn Qais Al-Hilali said: “When Ali (a.) and the people of Basrah came face to face, he called Az-Zubair: ‘O Abu Abdillah, come to me!” His companion said to him: “O Commander of the Believers, you go to Az-Zubair, who broke the oath of allegiance to you and is armed on a horse, while you sit on a mule and are unarmed?” Ali (a.) replied: “God’s protection is upon me and never will anyone be able to escape his death and neither will i die nor will i be killed except by the hand of the most unfortunate of this congregation, just as the most unfortunate of Thamud cut the legs of the camel of God.” Az-Zubair came and said: “Where is Talhah, that he may come.” Then Talhah also came and Ali (a.) said: “I beseech you by God! Both of you, the knowledgeable members of the family of Muhammad (s.) and Aishah, the daughter of Abu Bakr, know that the companions of the camel and the people of Nahrawan are cursed by the tongue of the Prophet (s.) and that those who invent lies will only be disappointed.” Then Az-Zubair said: “How can we be cursed if we are among those who have been promised paradise?” Ali (a.) replied: “If i knew anything about you being among those who were promised paradise, i would not consider fighting you.” Az-Zubair said: “Did you not hear how the Prophet (s.) said on the day of Uhud that Talhah would enter Paradise and anyone who desires to see a living martyr on earth should look to Talhah, and did you not hear how the Prophet (s.) said that Paradise was promised to ten companions from the tribe of the Quraish?” Ali (a.) said: “Tell me their names!” Az-Zubair replied: “Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman.” And when he had listed nine companions, among them Abu Ubaidah Ibn Al-Jarrah and Sa’id Ibn Zaid Ibn Amr Ibn Nufail, Ali (a.) said: “You have named only nine companions, who is the tenth?” Az-Zubair said: “This is you.” Then Ali (a.) said: “As for you, you have already confirmed that i am one of those to whom Paradise was promised, but as for you and your companions, i am one of those who deny the promise to you. By God, some of the companions you named will be in a coffin in a well at the bottom of hellfire, and on the well there will be a stone. If God wills it, He will kindle the fire of hell and remove the stone, and hell fire will be kindled. This is what i heard from the Prophet Muhammad (s.). If it should be otherwise, may God grant you victory over me and my blood be shed at your hands, and if it should be true, may God grant me victory over you and your companions.” After this conversation, Az-Zubair returned to his companions while he burst into tears.” [Kitab Sulaim, 327 – 328 Hadith 29]

عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن سليم بن قيس الهلالي رضي الله عنهما قال: لما التقى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام، وأهل البصرة يوم الجمل نادى علي عليه السلام الزبير: يا أبا عبد الله، اخرج إلي فقال له أصحابه: يا أمير المؤمنين، تخرج إلى الزبير الناكث بيعته وهو على فرس شاك في السلاح وأنت على بغلة بلا سلاح؟ فقال علي عليه السلام: إن علي من الله جنة واقية لن يستطيع أحد فرارا من أجله. وإني لا أموت ولا أقتل إلا على يدي أشقاها كما عقر ناقة الله أشقى ثمود. فخرج إليه الزبير. فقال: أين طلحة؟ ليخرج. فخرج طلحة. أصحاب الجمل ملعونون على لسان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فقال عليه السلام: نشدتكما بالله، أتعلمان وأولوا العلم من آل محمد وعائشة بنت أبي بكر (أن أصحاب الجمل وأهل النهروان ملعونون على لسان محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وقد خاب من افترى؟ فقال الزبير: كيف نكون ملعونين ونحن من أهل الجنة؟ فقال علي عليه السلام: لو علمت أنكم من أهل الجنة لما استحللت قتالكم فقال الزبير: أما سمعت رسول الله يقول يوم أحد: أوجب طلحة الجنة، ومن أراد أن ينظر إلى شهيد يمشي على الأرض حيا فلينظر إلى طلحة؟ أوما سمعت رسول الله يقول: عشرة من قريش في الجنة؟ رد أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام حديث العشرة المبشرة فقال علي عليه السلام: فسمهم. قال: فلان وفلان وفلان، حتى عد تسعة، فيهم أبو عبيدة بن الجراح وسعيد بن زيد بن عمرو بن نفيل فقال علي عليه السلام: عددت تسعة، فمن العاشر؟ قال الزبير: أنت فقال علي عليه السلام: أما أنت فقد أقررت أني من أهل الجنة، وأما ما ادعيت لنفسك وأصحابك فإني به لمن الجاحدين. والله إن بعض من سميت لفي تابوت في جب في أسفل درك من جهنم، على ذلك الجب صخرة إذا أراد الله أن يسعر جهنم رفع تلك الصخرة فأسعرت جهنم. سمعت ذلك من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله، وإلا فأظفرك الله بي وسفك دمي بيدك، وإلا فأظفرني الله بك وبأصحابك فرجع الزبير إلى أصحابه وهو يبكي

Ahmad Ibn Ali reported that Sulaim Ibn Qais Al-Hilali said: “When Ali (a.) met the people of Basrah on the day of the battle of the camel, he called Az-Zubair: “O Abu Abdillah, come to me!” Then Az-Zubair and Talhah came to him, and he said to them: “By Allah, you, the people of knowledge from the family of Muhammad (s.) and Aishah, the daughter of Abu Bakr, know that the companions of the camel are cursed by the tongue of the Prophet (s.), and he who invents lies only experiences disappointment.” They said: “How can we be cursed if we are among those who have been promised paradise?” Ali (a.) replied: “If paradise had been promised to you, i would not have allowed the people to fight you.” Then Az-Zubair said: “But i heard from Sa’id Ibn Amr Ibn Nufail that the Messenger of God (s.) said that ten of his companions from the tribe of the Quraish were promised Paradise.” Ali (a.) said: “I heard it being reported during the reign of Uthman.” Az-Zubair said: “Did he invent a lie about the Prophet (s.)?” Ali (a.) answered: “I will tell you nothing more until you tell me the names of the companions to whom Paradise was promised.” Az-Zubair said: “Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Talhah, Az-Zubair Ibn Al-Awam, Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Awf, Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqas, Abu Ubaidah Ibn Al-Jarrah and Sa’id Ibn Amr Ibn Nufail.” Ali (a.) said: “You have named only nine companions. Who is the tenth?” Az-Zubair replied: “It is you.” Then Ali (a.) said: “You have already confirmed that i am one of those to whom Paradise was promised, but as for the claim that Paradise was promised to you and your companions, i am one of those who reject and deny it.” Az-Zubair said: “Did Sa’id lie about the Messenger of God?” Ali replied: “I was not a witness that he lied, but by God, He is the One who is aware.” And Ali (a.) said: “Some of those whom you have named will be in a coffin in a well in the deepest bottom of Hellfire, and on the well will be a stone. If Allah wills, He will kindle the fire of Hell, and remove the stone, and the fire of Hell will be kindled. This is what i heard from the Prophet Muhammad (s.). If it should be otherwise, may God grant you victory over me and my blood be shed through your hands, and if it should be true, may God grant me victory over you and your companions and your blood be shed through my hands and your souls be carried away into hell fire. After this conversation, Az-Zubair returned to his companions as he burst into tears.” [Al-Ihtijaj of Abu Mansur At-Tabarsi, Volume 1 Page 237]

عن أحمد بن علي عن سليم بن قيس الهلالي رضي الله عنهما قال: لما التقى أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام أهل البصرة يوم الجمل. نادى الزبير يا أبا عبد الله أخرج إلي: فخرج الزبير ومعه طلحة. فقال لهما والله إنكما لتعلمان وأولوا العلم من آل محمد وعائشة بنت أبي بكر: أن كل أصحاب الجمل ملعونون على لسان محمد صلى الله عليه وآله، وقد خاب من افترى قالا كيف نكون ملعونين ونحن أصحاب بدر وأهل الجنة؟ فقال عليه السلام: لو علمت أنكم من أهل الجنة لما استحللت قتالكم، فقال له الزبير: أما سمعت حديث سعيد بن عمرو بن نفيل وهو يروي: أنه سمع من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يقول: عشرة من قريش في الجنة؟ قال علي عليه السلام: سمعته يحدث بذلك عثمان في خلافته، فقال الزبير أفترا كذب على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله؟ فقال له علي عليه السلام: لست أخبرك بشئ حتى تسميهم قال الزبير: أبو بكر، وعمر، وعثمان، وطلحة، والزبير، وعبد الرحمن بن عوف، وسعد بن أبي وقاص، وأبو عبيدة بن الجراح، وسعيد بن عمرو بن نفيل. فقال له علي عليه السلام: عددت تسعة فمن العاشر؟ قال له: أنت قال علي عليه السلام: قد أقررت أني من أهل الجنة، وأما ما ادعيت لنفسك وأصحابك فإنا به من الجاحدين الكافرين، قال له، أفتراه كذب على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله؟ قال عليه السلام: ما أراه كذب، ولكنه والله اليقين. فقال علي عليه السلام: والله إن بعض من سميته لفي تابوت في شعب في جب في أسفل درك من جهنم، على ذلك الجب صخرة إذا أراد الله أن يسعر جهنم رفع تلك الصخرة، سمعت ذلك من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وإلا أظفرك الله بي وسفك دمي على يديك، وإلا أظفرني الله عليك وعلى أصحابك وسفك دمائكم على يدي وعجل أرواحكم إلى النار، فرجع الزبير إلى أصحابه وهو يبكي
