What a believer learns from the story of Joseph

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said:“By God, certainly i treat one of my children kindly, put him on my lap and give him increased love and thanks, while the right belongs to another of my children. However, it is to protect him from him and from others, so that they do not do to him what the brothers of Joseph did to him, and God sent down the chapter on Joseph merely as an example, so that we do not envy each other, as the brothers of Joseph envied him and attacked him. So He made it a proof to those who were close to us, believed in our love and renounced our enemies. To the one, who declared war and hostility against us (Nasib).” [Tafsir-ul-Ayyashi of Al-Ayyashi, Volume 2, Page 166, Hadith 2]

مسعدة بن صدقة عن جعفر بن محمد عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: والله إنى لأصانع بعض ولدي وأجلسه على فخذي وأكثر له المحبة وأكثر له الشكر وإن الحق لغيره من ولدي ولكن محافظة عليه منه ومن غيره لئلا يصنعوا به ما فعل بيوسف واخوته، وما أنزل الله سورة يوسف الا أمثالا لكي لا يحسد بعضنا بعضا كما حسد بيوسف اخوته وبغوا عليه فجعلها حجة على من تولانا ودان بحبنا وجحد أعدائنا على من نصب لنا الحرب والعداوة

Ali Ibn Mahziyar reported that Bakr Ibn Salih said: “A brother-in-law of mine wrote to Abu Ja’far Ath-Thani (Al-Jawad): “My father is hostile (Nasib) and holds evil views and i have experienced difficulty and struggle through him. Now what do you think about it, may my life be sacrificed to you, to pray for me and what do you think about it, may my life be sacrificed to you? Do you think that i should expose him or deal with him in an affectionate way?” To this he wrote: “I have understood your letter and what you mentioned about the matter with your father, and i will not refrain from praying for you, God willing, and affability is better for you than exposure, and with difficulty comes relief. (94:5) Be patient, then, for the outcome decides in favor of the mindful. (11:49) God strengthen you under the leadership of the one you are close to. We and you are in the good entrusted to God, who does not allow his entrusted good to be lost.” Bakr said: “Then God softened his father’s heart for him until he began not to oppose him in any way.” [Al-Amali of Al-Mufid, page 191, hadith 20]

أحمد بن محمد بن الحسن عن محمد بن الحسن بن الوليد القمي عن محمد بن الحسن الصفار عن العباس بن معروف عن علي بن مهزيار عن بكر بن صالح قال: كتب صهر لي إلى أبي جعفر الثاني صلوات الله عليه: إن أبي ناصب خبيث الرأي وقد لقيت منه شدة وجهدا فرأيك جعلت فداك في الدعاء لي وما ترى جعلت فداك أفترى أن أكاشفه أم أداريه فكتب عليه السلام: قد فهمت كتابك وما ذكرت من أمر أبيك، ولست أدع الدعاء لك إن شاء الله، والمداراة خير لك من المكاشفة، ومع العسر يسر فاصبر فإن العاقبة للمتقين ثبتك الله على ولاية من توليت نحن وأنتم في وديعة الله الذي لا تضيع ودائعه قال بكر: فعطف الله بقلب أبيه عليه حتى صار لا يخالفه في شيء

Saif Ibn Umairah reported that Abu Bakr Al-Hadrami said: “My brother Alqamah said to Abu Ja’far (Al-Baqir): “People are fighting because of Ali.” Then Abu Ja’far (a.) said to me: “I mean it, that if you would hear that a human is insulting Ali and you could cut off his nose, you would do it.” I said: “Yes.” He said: “But do not do it.” Then he said: “Surely i hear someone insult Ali and shield myself from him behind a pillar. Then when he came to the very end, i went to him. Then i shook his hand.” [Al-Mahasin of Al-Barqi, Volume 1, Page 260, Hadith 314]

أحمد بن محمد عن محمد بن خالد عن فضالة بن أيوب عن سيف بن عميرة عن أبي بكر الحضرمي قال قال علقمة أخي لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: إن أبا بكر قال يقاتل الناس في علي فقال لي أبو جعفر عليه السلام: إني أراك لو سمعت إنسانا يشتم عليا فاستطعت أن تقطع أنفه فعلت، قلت: نعم، قال: فلا تفعل، ثم قال: إني لاسمع الرجل يسب عليا وأستتر منه بالسارية فإذا فرغ أتيته فصافحته

Abu Usamah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “It is incumbent upon you to be mindful towards God, the restraint, the effort, the truthful testimony, the return of the entrusted, the good character and the good neighbourliness. Be callers to you without using your tongues. Be to us an adornment and not a disgrace. Long bowing and prostration are incumbent upon you, for if any of you bowed and prostrated yourselves for a long time, the devil behind him would call out loud and say: “Woe to him. He obeyed while i disobeyed. He prostrated himself while i refused.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 2, Page 77, Hadith 9]

محمد بن يحيى عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى عن علي بن النعمان عن أبي أسامة عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليه السلام قال: عليك بتقوى الله والورع والاجتهاد وصدق الحديث وأداء الأمانة وحسن الخلق وحسن الجوار وكونوا دعاة إلى أنفسكم بغير ألسنتكم وكونوا زينا ولا تكونوا شينا، وعليكم بطول الركوع والسجود، فإن أحدكم إذا طال الركوع والسجود هتف إبليس من خلفه وقال: يا ويله أطاع وعصيت وسجد وأبيت
