Umar threatens Fatimah

Question:

Do the innovators report that Umar wanted to burn down the house of Fatimah (a.)?

Answer:

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said: “When the Prophet Muhammad (s.) died, we learned that the helpers from Medina were against us and held a meeting with their people in Saqifah, with the sons of Sa’adah, and Ali and Az-Zubair and those who were with them were against us.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6442]

[ 1. ] Muhammad Ibn Bishr reported from [ 2. ] Ubaidullah Ibn Umar, who reported from [ 3. ] Zaid Ibn Aslam, who reported from his father [ 4. ] Aslam Al-Adawi, who reported that at the time when Abu Bakr took the oath of allegiance after the Prophet Muhammad (s ) – Ali (a.) and Az-Zubair used to come in to Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger (s.), to consult with her and check her affairs. When Umar Ibn Al-Khattab heard of this, he set out until he came in to Fatimah (a.). Umar said: “O daughter of the Messenger, by Allah, there is no one whom we love more than your father, and there is no one whom we love more after your father than you, and I swear by Allah that if this group gathers with you, this will not prevent me from giving the order to burn down the house over them!” When Umar left, the two of them came to her and she said: “Are you aware that Umar came to me and swore by God that when you came back, he would burn down the house over you? I swear by God that if he swears to it, he will do so. Move away considerate and reconsider your views and do not return to me!” So they moved away from her and they did not return to her until they took the oath of allegiance to Abu Bakr.” [Al-Musannaf by Ibn Abi Shaibah, Volume 8, Page 572, Hadith 36348]
