The best of the creators (23:14)

“Then We created the drop into an appendage. Then We created the appendage into a lump. Then We created the lump into bones. Then We clothed the bones with a flesh. Then We created it as another creation. Blessed be God, the Best of the Creators.” [Al-Mu’minun 23:14]

ثم خلقنا النطفة علقة فخلقنا العلقة مضغة فخلقنا المضغة عظاما فكسونا العظام لحما ثم أنشأناه خلقا آخر فتبارك الله أحسن الخالقين

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “God created creators. So when He wanted to create creatures, He instructed them. So they took from the earth, about which He said in His Scripture: “From it We created you, and into it We make you return, and from it We bring you forth another time.” (20:55) Hereupon they kneaded the drop with that earth from which it was created after He let it rest in the womb for forty nights. When hereupon four months were completed for him, they said: “Lord, what do we create?” Thus He commands them what He wills, whether male or female, whether light or dark. Then, when the spirit left the body, that very drop came out of it, whoever it is, young or old, male or female. That is why one washes the deceased with the ablution for remoteness (Janabah).” Then one said to him: “O son of the Messenger of God. No, by God. I never tell this to Ibn Qais Al-Masir.” So he said: “That is up to you.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 3, page 162 – 163, Hadith 1]

علي بن محمد بن عبد الله، عن إبراهيم بن إسحاق، عن محمد بن سليمان الديلمي عن سليمان بن زكريا عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال إن الله تعالى خلق خلاقين فإذا أراد أن يخلق خلقا أمرهم فأخذوا من التربة التي قال في كتابه منها خلقناكم وفيها نعيدكم ومنها نخرجكم تارة أخرى فعجن النطفة بتلك التربة التي يخلق منها بعد أن أسكنها الرحم أربعين ليلة فإذا تمت لها أربعة أشهر قالوا: يا رب نخلق ماذا فيأمرهم بما يريد من ذكر أو أنثى، أبيض أو أسود، فإذا خرجت الروح من البدن خرجت هذه النطفة بعينها منه كائنا ما كان صغيرا أو كبيرا ذكرا أو أنثى فلذلك يغسل الميت غسل الجنابة فقال الرجل: يا ابن رسول الله لا والله ما أخبر ابن قيس الماصر بهذا أبدا فقال ذلك إليك

Muhammad ibn Fudail reported that Thabit ibn Dinar said: “When God created the creatures from clay, He poured them as one pours arrows. Then He took out the Muslim, whereupon He made him blissful and the disbeliever miserable. When the drop falls, the angels receive it. Then they formed it. Hereupon they said: “Lord, male or female?” Then the Lord says whatever He wants. Then they say: “Blessed be God, the best of the creators.” (23:14) Hereupon it is put inside them. Then it is made to go back and forth in every vein and joint, and from it there are three closures for the womb. One closure is at its top from what is immediately adjacent to the top of the navel from the right side, the other closure is in the middle of it and the other closure is below the womb. So after nine days it is put into the highest closure. It remains like this for three months. At that time, the woman experiences the nausea of the self and vomiting.Then it comes down to the middle closure. There it remains three months and in the navel of the child is a place of union of the veins and all the veins of the woman. From it is his food and his drink from those veins. Then it descends to the lower closure. Thus it remains in it for three months. So this is nine months. Then a detachment happens to the woman. Every time she experiences detachment, a vein is separated from the navel of the child. Hereupon she feels that pain and his hand is on her navel. It falls down to the earth while his hand is open. After this, its sustenance is through its mouth.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6, page 15 – 16, Hadith 5]

محمد بن يحيى عن أحمد بن محمد عن الحسين بن سعيد عن محمد بن الفضيل عن ثابت بن دينار الثمالي قال: سألت أبا جعفر عليه السلام عن الخلق قال: إن الله تبارك وتعالى لما خلق الخلق من طين أفاض بها كإفاضة القدح فأخرج المسلم فجعله سعيدا وجعل الكافر شقيا فإذا وقعت النطقة تلقتها الملائكة فصوروها ثم قالوا يا رب أذكرا أو أنثى فيقول الرب جل جلاله أي ذلك شاء فيقولان تبارك الله أحسن الخالقين ثم توضع في بطنها فتردد تسعة أيام في كل عرق ومفصل ومنها للرحم ثلاثة أقفال قفل في أعلاها مما يلي أعلا الصرة من الجانب الأيمن، والقفل الآخر وسطها والقفل الآخر أسفل من الرحم فيوضع بعد تسعة أيام في القفل الاعلى فيمكث فيه ثلاثة أشهر فعند ذلك يصيب المرأة خبث النفس والتهوع ثم ينزل إلى القفل الأوسط فيمكث فيه ثلاثة أشهر وصرة الصبي فيها مجمع العروق وعروق المرأة كلها منها يدخل طعامه وشرابه من تلك العروق، ثم ينزل إلى القفل الأسفل فيمكث فيه ثلاثة أشهر فذلك تسعة أشهر ثم تطلق المرأة فكلما طلقت انقطع عرق من صرة الصبي فأصابها ذلك الوجع ويده على صرته يقع إلى الأرض ويده مبسوطة فيكون رزقه حينئذ من فيه

Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr reported that Abd-ur-Rahman ibn Hammad said: “I asked Abu Ibrahim (Al-Kazim) about the deceased: “Why do you wash him with the washing of remoteness (Janabah)?” He said: “God is more exalted and more pure than that He causes things with His hand. God has angels as creators. So, when He wanted to create creatures, He assigned those creators. So they took from the earth, about which He said in His Scripture: “From it We created you, and into it We make you return, and from it We bring you forth another time.” (20:55) Hereupon they kneaded it with that drop which is located in the womb. When the drop was kneaded with the earth, they said: “Lord, what do we create?” He said: “So God reveals to them what He wants, whether male or female, whether believer or unbeliever, whether light or dark, whether unfortunate or fortunate. Then, when he dies, he asks for that very drop from Him. Not any other. That is why it was arranged for the deceased to be washed with the washing of remoteness (Janabah).” [Ilal-ush-Shara’i’ of As-Saduq, Vol. 1, page 300 – 301]

الحسين بن أحمد رحمه الله عن أبيه عن أحمد بن محمد ابن عيسى عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر عن عبد الرحمن بن حماد قال: سألت أبا إبراهيم عليه السلام عن الميت لم يغسل غسل الجنابة قال: إن الله تبارك وتعالى أعلا وأخلص من أن يبعث أشياء بيده إن لله تبارك وتعالى ملكين خلاقين فإذا أراد ان يخلق خلقا أمر أولئك الخلاقين فأخذوا من التربة التي قال الله عز وجل في كتابه منها خلقناكم وفيها نعيدكم ومنها نخرجكم تارة أخرى فعجنوها بالنطفة المسكنة في الرحم فإذا عجنت النطفة بالتربة قالا: يا رب ما نخلق قال فيوحي الله تبارك وتعالى إليهما ما يريد من ذلك ذكرا أو أنثى مؤمنا أو كافرا أسود أو أبيض شقيقا أو سعيدا، فإذا مات سالت منه تلك النطفة بعينها لا غيرها فمن ثم صار الميت يغسل غسل الجنابة

Muhammad ibn Husain reported that Muhammad ibn Isma’il or another said: “I said to Abu Ja’far (Al-Baqir): Someone prays for a pregnant woman so that God will make that which is inside her, an unharmed male child.” He said: He prays what is between him and four months, for it is forty nights a drop and forty nights a lump. This is the whole of four months. Then God sends angels as creators who say: “Lord, what do we create? Male or female? Unfortunate or blissful?” Then it is conveyed. Then they speak: “Lord, what is his provision and what is his term and what is his period?” Then it is conveyed and its covenant is on its forehead. It considers it and remains straightened up inside its mother until when its exit approaches, God sends an angel, whereupon he rebukes it with a rebuke. Thus he comes out and forgets the covenant.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6, Page 16, Hadith 6]

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن محمد بن الحسين عن محمد بن إسماعيل أو غيره قال: قلت لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: جعلت فداك الرجل يدعو للحبلى أن يجعل الله ما في بطنها ذكرا سويا قال يدعو ما بينه وبين أربعة أشهر فإنه أربعين ليلة نطفة وأربعين ليلة علقة وأربعين ليلة مضغة فذلك تمام أربعة أشهر ثم يبعث الله ملكين خلاقين فيقولان يا رب ما نخلق ذكرا أم أنثى شقيا أو سعيدا فيقال ذلك، فيقولان: يا رب ما رزقه وما أجله وما مدته فيقال ذلك وميثاقه بين عينيه ينظر إليه ولا يزال منتصبا في بطن أمه حتى إذا دنا خروجه بعث الله عز وجل إليه ملكا فزجره زجرة فيخرج وينسى الميثاق

Zurarah Ibn A’yan reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “When the drop falls into the womb, it settles in it for forty days and is an appendage for forty days and a lump for forty days. Then God sends angels as creators, whereupon it is said to them: “Create as God wills, whether male or female. Form it and record its term and provision and death and whether it is unfortunate or blissful and record for God the covenant on its forehead which He received from it in the pre-existence.” When its exit from the interior of its mother approaches, God sends an angel to it called Zajir, whereupon He rebukes it. At this it gets a fright. Then it forgets the covenant and falls to the earth. It cries because of the rebuke of the angel.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6, Page 16, Hadith 7]

محمد بن يحيى عن أحمد بن محمد وعلي بن إبراهيم عن إبراهيم بن هاشم عن الحسن ببن محبوب عن علي بن رئاب عن زرارة بن أعين عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: إذا وقعت النطفة في رحم استقرت فيها أربعين يوما وتكون علقة أربعين يوما وتكون مضغة أربعين يوما ثم يبعث الله ملكين خلاقين فيقال لهما: اخلقا كما يريد الله ذكرا أو أنثى صوراه واكتبا أجله ورزقه ومنيته وشقيا أو سعيدا واكتبا لله الميثاق الذي أخذه عليه في الذر بين عينيه فإذا دنا خروجه من بطن أمه بعث الله إليه ملكا يقال له: زاجر فيزجره فيفزع فزعا فينسى الميثاق ويقع إلى الأرض يبكي من زجرة الملك

Abu Khalid As-Saiqal reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “God entrusted the matter to an angel from among the angels. So he created seven heavens and seven earths. So when he saw that things had been arranged for him, he said: “Who is like me?” Then God sent a little fire out of the fire to him.” I said: “What is the little fire?” He said: “The fire of a fingertip. Because the self-admiration went into him, He burned with it all that he created until it reached him.” [Thawab-ul-A’mal of As-Saduq, page 251.]

علي بن الحسين بن موسى بن بابويه عن سعد بن عبد الله عن أحمد بن عبد الله عن محمد بن سنان عن أبي العلاء عن أبي خالد الصيقل عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: إن الله عز وجل فوض الامر إلى ملك من الملائكة فخلق سبع سماوات وسبع أرضين وأشياء سبع سماوات وسبع أرضين وأشياء فلما رأى الأشياء قد انقادت له قال من مثلي فأرسله الله عز وجل نويرة من نار قلت وما نويرة من نار قال نار أنملة فاستقبلها بجميع ما خلق حتى وصلت إليه لما دخله العجب

Fath Ibn Yazid reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.): “May my life be sacrificed to you. Is there a Creator besides the glorious Creator?” He said: “God says: “Blessed be God, the Best of Creators.” (23:14) Thus He has informed that there are creators among His servants. Among them is Jesus, the son of Mary (a.). He created something like a bird form from clay with the permission of God, whereupon He breathed into it and it became a bird with the permission of God (3:49) and Samiri created a calf for them. A body that was bleating.” (20:88) [At-Tawhid of As-Saduq, page 63, hadith 18]

علي بن أحمد بن محمد بن عمران الدقاق عن محمد بن أبي عبد الله الكوفي عن محمد بن إسماعيل البرمكي عن الحسين بن الحسن بن بردة عن العباس بن عمرو الفقيمي عن أبي القاسم إبراهيم بن محمد العلوي عن الفتح بن يزيد الجرجاني أنه سأل علي بن موسى الرضا عليه السلام: جعلت فداك وغير الخالق الجليل خالق قال: إن الله تبارك وتعالى يقول تبارك الله أحسن الخالقين فقد أخبر أن في عباده خالقين منهم عيسى ابن مريم، خلق من الطين كهيئة الطير بإذن الله فنفخ فيه فصار طائرا بإذن الله والسامري خلق لهم عجلا جسدا له خوار

Muhammad ibn Ali As-Saduq writes: “The creation of Jesus (a.) from the form of a bird out of clay is also a predetermined creation and the designer of the bird and its creator is in fact God.” [At-Tawhid, page 216]

قال الشيخ محمد بن علي الصدوق: وخلق عيسى عليه السلام من الطين كهيئة الطير هو خلق تقدير أيضا ومكون الطير وخالقه في الحقيقة هو الله عز وجل

Shadhan ibn Umar reported that Murrah ibn Qabisah ibn Abdi l-Hamid said: “Jabir ibn Yazid Al-Ju’fi said to me: “I saw my master Al-Baqir (a.) and he created an elephant from clay. Hereupon he sat on it and flew in the air until he reached Mecca on it and returned.” But I did not believe him until I saw my master Al-Baqir (a.). So I said to him: “Jabir told me such and such about you.” Then he created the same and ascended and carried me along with him to Mecca and brought me back.” [Dala’il-ul-Imamah of At-Tabari, page 220, hadith 141]

محمد بن جرير بن رستم عن أحمد بن منصور الرمادي عن شاذان بن عمر عن مرة بن قبيصة بن عبد الحميد قال: قال لي جابر بن يزيد الجعفي: رأيت مولاي الباقر عليه السلام وقد صنع فيلا من طين فركبه وطار في الهواء حتى ذهب إلى مكة عليه ورجع فلم أصدق ذلك منه حتى رأيت الباقر عليه السلام فقلت له: أخبرني جابر عنك بكذا وكذا فصنع مثله وركب وحملني معه إلى مكة وردني

Amr ibn Abdillah reported that Hubairah ibn Yarim said: “Ali (a.) came out to us holding a hazelnut in his hand. Then he said: “Do you know what this one is?” We said: “We do not know.” He said: “But I do know. I created it. Does not He who created know? And He is the Benevolent, the Knowing.” [Al-Fawa’id of Al-Maruzi, page 21, hadith 129]

يحيى بن آدم عن إسرائيل بن يونس عن عمرو بن عبد الله عن هبيرة بن يريم قال: خرج إلينا علي عليه السلام وفي يده بندقة فقال: أتدرون ما هذه قلنا: لا ندري قال: لكني أدري أنا صنعتها ألا يعلم من خلق وهو اللطيف الخبير

Muhammad Ibn Ishaq and Thabit Ibn Thabit reported that Jumhur Ibn Hakim said: “I saw Ali Ibn Husain (a.) and he had wings which were grown and feathers. So he flew. Then he landed. Then he said: “I saw at that hour Ja’far ibn Abi Talib in the highest heights.” Thereupon I said: “Are you able to ascend?” Then he said: “We created it. How, then, shall we not be able to ascend to that which we created? We are the bearers of the throne and we are on the throne and the throne and seat are ours.” He then presented me with a palm tree stand outside of his times.” [Dala’il-ul-Imamah of At-Tabari, page 201, hadith 120]

محمد بن جرير بن رستم عن عبد الله بن منير عن محمد بن إسحاق الصاعدي وأبي محمد ثابت بن ثابت عن جمهور بن حكيم قال: رأيت علي بن الحسين عليه السلام وقد نبت له أجنحة وريش فطار ثم نزل، فقال: رأيت الساعة جعفر بن أبي طالب في أعلى عليين فقلت: وهل تستطيع أن تصعد فقال: نحن صنعناها فكيف لا نقدر أن نصعد إلى ما صنعناه نحن حملة العرش ونحن على العرش، والعرش والكرسي لنا ثم أعطاني طلعا في غير أوانه

Jabir ibn Yazid reported that Abu Khalid Al-Kabuli said:“Imam Ali ibn Husain Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said when we asked him about the verse: “We have put towers in the sky and decorated it for the observers.” (15:16) He said: “Qanbar, the disciple of Ali (a.), came to his abode to ask for him and a maid came out to him whose name was Fiddah. Qanbar said: “Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?” And she was his maid. So she said: “In the towers.” Qanbar said: “I am not aware of any towers from the Commander of the Believers (a.).” So I said: “What is he doing in the towers?” She said: “He is in the topmost towers. He distributes the provisions, sets the terms, creates the creatures, causes to die, makes to live, elevates and degrades.”Qanbar said: “Then I said: “By God, surely I am informing the Commander of the Believers (a.) about what I heard from this disbeliever.” Now, as we remained like this, the Commander of the Believers (a.) appeared, while her statement astonished me. So he said to me: “O Qanbar, what is this conversation you had with Fiddah?” Then I said: “O Commander of the Believers, Fiddah mentioned so-and-so and I remained astonished at her statement.” So he said: “O Qanbar and you denied that.” I said: “My Lord, with the most intensive denial.” He said: “O Qanbar, approach me.” So I approached him. Then he spoke something which I did not understand. Thereupon he stroked my eyes with his hand. There were suddenly the heavens and what is in them before the Commander of the Believers (a.), as if they were a whorl or a walnut that he plays with as he pleases.” And he said: “By God, I have seen many creatures coming and going back. I did not know that God created them all. Then he said to me: “O Qanbar.” I said: “Yes, O Commander of the believers.” He said: “These belong to our first one. It takes its way to our last. We created them and we created what is in it and what is between the both and what is under the both.” Then he stroked my eyes with his upper hand. Thus disappeared from me all that I saw, until I saw nothing of it and returned to what I had of sight.” [Tafsir-ul-Ju’fi, page 352 – 353, Hadith 420]

أبو علي محمد بن همام عن جعفر بن محمد بن مالك الفزاري عن محمد بن صدقة عن محمد بن سنان عن المفضل بن عمر عن جابر بن يزيد الجعفي عن أبي خالد الكابلي قال: قال الإمام علي بن الحسين زين العابدين عليهما السلام لما سألناه عن هذه الآية ولقد جعلنا في السماء بروجا وزيناها للناظرين قال: إن قنبرا مولى علي عليه السلام أتى منزله يسأل عنه وخرجت إليه جارية يقال لها فضة قال قنبر فقلت لها: أين علي بن أبي طالب وكانت جاريته فقالت: في البروج قال قنبر: وأنا لا أعرف لأمير المؤمنين عليه السلام بروجا فقلت: وما يصنع في البروج قالت: هو في البروج الأعلى يقسم الأرزاق ويعين الآجال ويخلق الخلق ويميت ويحيي ويعز ويذل قال قنبر فقلت: والله لأخبرن مولاي أمير المؤمنين ما سمعت من هذه الكافرة فبينا نحن كذلك إذ طلع أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وأنا متعجب من مقالتها فقال لي: يا قنبر ما هذا الكلام الذي جرى بينك وبين فضة فقلت: يا أمير المؤمنين إن فضة ذكرت كذا وكذا وقد بقيت متعجبا من قولها فقال عليه السلام: يا قنبر وأنكرت ذلك قلت: يا مولاي أشد الإنكار قال: يا قنبر ادن مني فدنوت منه فتكلم بشيء لم أفهمه ثم مسح يده على عيني فإذا السماوات وما فيهن بين يدي أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام كأنها فلكة أو جوزة يلعب بها كيف ما شاء وقال: والله إني قد رأيت خلقا كثيرا يقبلون ويدبرون ما علمت أن الله خلق كلهم فقال لي: يا قنبر قلت: نعم يا أمير المؤمنين قال: هذه لأولنا يجري لآخرنا خلقناهم وخلقنا ما فيها وما بينهما وما تحتهما ثم مسح يده العليا على عيني فغاب عني جميع ما كنت أراه حتى لم أر منه شيئا وعدت على ما كنت عليه من رأي البصر

Rajab ibn Muhammad reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “I am the Creator of the regions by the order of the knowledgeable, the wise. I am the Word by which things were carried out and through which times passed. I made from the regions four and from the islands seven.” [Mashariq Anwari l-Yaqin of Al-Bursi, page 266.]

رجب بن محمد بن رجب عن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام قال: أنا صانع الأقاليم بأمر العليم الحكيم أنا الكلمة التي بها تمت الأمور ودهرت الدهور أنا جعلت الأقاليم أرباعا والجزائر سبعا

Ibn Manzur Al-Ansari writes: “Region (Iqlim) is one of the seven regions of the earth and regions are parts of the earth and the singular of it is region.” [Lisan-ul-Arab, Vol. 12, p. 391.]

قال الأديب محمد بن منظور الأنصاري: والإقليم واحد أقاليم الأرض السبعة وأقاليم الأرض أقسامها واحدها إقليم
