Destruction of the graves?
1st Question:
A follower from amongst the innovators made the claim that the Messenger (s.) had instructed Imam Ali (a.) to destroy the graves of the believers and prophets (a.) and thus this act was equally permissible for them. He gave Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah as the source under number 6614. Is this indeed the statement of the Infallible (a.)?
Response:
The Infallible (a.) is free from such false doctrine.
Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “I was sent by Prophet Muhammad (s.) to level the graves to the ground and break the images.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 5 page 305 Hadith 6614]
عن سهل، عن جعفر بن محمد الأشعري، عن ابن القداح، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: بعثني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله في هدم القبور وكسر الصور
Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The grave of Prophet Muhammad (s.) was raised a little from the earth and also he ordered the watering of his grave.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 3 page 194 Hadith 3383]
وبإسناده عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن الغفاري، عن إبراهيم بن علي، عن جعفر، عن أبيه عليهما السلام، أن قبر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله رفع شبرا من الأرض، وأن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله أمر برش القبور
Qudamah Ibn Za’idah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said:“Prophet Muhammad (s.) brought out his son Ibrahim (a.) and raised his grave.“ [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 3 page 192 Hadith 3377]
وعن محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن الحسن بن علي، عن ابن بكير، عن قدامة بن زائدة قال: سمعت أبا جعفر عليه السلام يقول: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله سل إبراهيم ابنه سلا، ورفع قبره
So the Messenger (s.) ordered that graves with images, which were not uncommon in the pagan times, be razed to the ground and not the graves of believers, which he on the contrary had even elevated.
2nd question:
Furthermore, the innovator claimed that Imam Ali (a.) declared anyone who renovates a grave or draws an image to be an infidel, citing Wasa’il-ush-Shiah at number 6617 as a source. Is this actually the statement of the Infallible (a.)?

The Infallible (a.) is free from such false doctrine.
Al-Asbagh Ibn Nubatah reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Whoever renews a grave or brings in a similitude, he has already left Islam.” Jamal-ud-Din Al-Hilli wrote: “Whoever opposes the Imam (a.) by renovation, the destruction and excavation of it and by permitting it, he has already left Islam.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 3 page 562 Hadith 6617; Mukhtalaf-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hilli, Volume 2 page 316]
وعن أبيه، عن ابن سنان، عن أبي الجارود، عن الأصبغ بن نباتة، عن أمير المؤمنين عليه الصلاة والسلام قال: من جدد قبرا أو مثل مثالا فقد خرج من الاسلام. قال جمال الدين الحلي رضي الله عنه: وإن من خالف الإمام – عليه السلام – في التجديد والتسنيم والنبش واستحل شيئا من ذلك فقد خرج من الإسلام
An-Nahiki reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whoever brings in a similitude or takes in a dog has already left Islam.” Thereupon someone said to him: “Then many people have already perished.” He said: “With my words about the one who brings in a similitude is meant someone who adds to the faith what does not belong to the faith of God and thereupon invites people to it, and with my words about the one who takes in a dog is meant someone who takes in an enemy of the people of the House (a.) and gives him something to eat and drink, and by this behavior he has already perished from Islam.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 16 Page 430 Hadith 2]
محمد بن علي بن الحسين في معاني الأخبار عن محمد بن علي ماجيلويه عن عمه محمد بن أبي القاسم عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله عن النهيكي رفعه إلى أبي عبد الله عليه السلام أنه قال: من مثل مثالا أو اقتنى كلبا فقد خرج من الاسلام فقتل له: هلك إذا كثير من الناس فقال: إنما عنيت بقولي: من مثل مثالا من نصب دينا غير دين الله ودعا الناس إليه و بقولي من اقتنى كلبا مبغضا لأهل البيت اقتناه فأطعمه وسقاه من فعل ذلك فقد خرج من الاسلام
Abu Ammar reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “What is the reward of the one who visits the grave of Ali (a.) and beautifies its earth?” He said: “O Abu Ammar, my father reported to me from his father who reported from his grandfather Al-Husain Ibn Ali (a.) that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said to him: “By God, they will murder you on the earth of Iraq and bury you there.” Al-Husain (a.) said: “O Messenger of God, what is the reward of the one who visits, beautifies and takes care of our graves?” He said: “O Abu Al-Hasan, God Himself will make your grave and the graves of your progeny into buildings of Paradise and its courtyards.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 10 Page 298 Hadith 1]
محمد بن الحسن باسناده عن محمد بن أحمد بن داود، عن محمد بن علي بن الفضل، عن الحسين بن محمد بن الفرزدق، عن علي بن موسى بن الأحول، عن محمد بن أبي السري، عن عبد الله بن محمد البلوي، عن عمارة بن زيد، عن أبي عامر واعظ أهل الحجاز قال: أتيت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام فقلت له: ما لمن زار قبره يعني أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وعمر تربته؟ فقال: يا أبا عمار حدثني أبي عن أبيه، عن جده الحسين بن علي عليهم السلام إن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال له: والله لتقتلن بأرض العراق وتدفن بها، قلت: يا رسول الله ما لمن زار قبورنا وعمرها وتعاهدها؟ قال لي: يا أبا الحسن ان الله قد جعل قبرك وقبر ولدك بقاعا من بقاع الجنة وعرصة من عرصاتها
