Children of Ar-Rida

Question:

Who were the children of the eighth Imam Ar-Rida (a.)?

Response:

Hanan ibn Sudair reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.): “Is there an Imam who has no descendants?” He said: “No child will be born to me except one, but God will cause many descendants to come forth from him.” [Al-Musnad of Al-Ataridi, Vol. 1 page 140]

روى الاربلي بسنده عن حنان بن سدير قال: قلت لأبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام يكون إمام ليس له عقب؟ فقال أبو الحسن عليه السلام: أما إنه لا يولد لي إلا واحدا ولكن الله ينشئ منه ذرية كثيرة

Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Al-Mufid writes: “Ali Ibn Musa Ar-Rida (a.) died leaving no child known to us except the Imam after him, Abu Ja’far, Muhammad Ibn Ali Al-Jawad, (a.) who was seven years and a few months old on the day of the death of his father.” [Al-Irshad, Vol. 2 page 271]
