The commanders [4:59]

Who are the commanders in the 59th verse of the 4th chapter “An-Nisa'”?

Response:

Aban reported that he asked Imam Ar-Rida (a.) about the verse: “O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and the commanders from among you.” (4:59) He said: “This means Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.).” Then he was silent and when his silence became longer, I said: “Who then?” He said: “Al-Hasan (a.).” Then he was silent and when his silence became longer, I said: “Who then?” He said: “Al-Husain (a.).” I said: “Who then?” He said: “Then Ali Ibn Al-Husain (a.).” Then he kept silent and he kept silent on each one until I asked the question again and he named them to their last. [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, Volume 1 page 251 Hadith 171]

عن أبان انه دخل على أبى الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: فسألته عن قول الله يا أيها الذين آمنوا أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم فقال: ذلك علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام ثم سكت، قال: فلما طال سكوته قلت: ثم من؟ قال: ثم الحسن، ثم سكت فلما طال سكوته قلت: ثم من؟ قال: الحسين، قلت: ثم من؟ قال: ثم علي بن الحسين وسكت، فلم يزل يسكت عند كل واحد حتى أعيد المسألة، فيقول حتى سماهم إلى آخرهم

Abdullah Ibn Ajlan reported that he asked Imam Al-Baqir (a.) about the verse: “O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and those, who have command among you.” (4:59) He said: “This refers to Ali (a.) and the Imams (a.). God appointed them in the positions of the Prophets (a.) without allowing or forbidding anything of their own accord.” [Tafsir Al-Ayyashi, Volume 1 page 252 Hadith 173]

عن عبد الله بن عجلان عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام في قوله أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم قال: هي في علي وفى الأئمة جعلهم الله مواضع الأنبياء غير أنهم لا يحلون شيئا ولا يحرمونه

Ali Ibn Al-Hakam reported that Al-Husain Ibn Abi Al-Ala’ said: “I mentioned to Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) our statement about the representatives: “Obedience to them is obligatory.” Therefore, he said: “Yes, it is so. They are those about whom the Exalted said: ‘”O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and the commanders from among you.” (4:59) And they are those about whom the Exalted says, “Your near ones are God and His Messenger and the believers who perform the prayer and pay the tribute while bowing down.” (5:55) [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 page 187 Hadith 8]

أحمد بن محمد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن الحسين بن أبي العلاء قال: ذكرت لأبي عبد الله عليه لاسلام قولنا في الأوصياء أن طاعتهم مفترضة قال: فقال: نعم، هم الذين قال الله تعالى: أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم وهم الذين قال الله عز وجل: إنما وليكم الله ورسوله والذين آمنوا

Jabir reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said about the verse: “O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and the commanders from among you.” (4:59) Said: “These are the infallible and the perfectly pure, who neither sin nor transgress.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 23 Page 19 Hadith 14]

علل الشرائع: الطالقاني عن الجلودي عن المغيرة بن محمد عن رجاء بن سلمة عن عمرو بن شمر عن جابر عن الإمام الباقر عليه السلام في هذه الآية: يا أيها الذين آمنوا أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم وهم المعصومون المطهرون الذين لا يذنبون ولا يعصون

Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Beware of three with regard to your faith: A man, who recites the Qur’an, until you see him resort to attacks, he draws his sword against his neighbour and he accuses him of idolatry.” I said: “O Commander of the Believers, which of the two is nearer to idolatry?”He said: “A man, who accuses of idolatry, a man who supports it with statements and every time he makes false statements, he prolongs them out and a man, to whom God has predestined to rule and who after that claimed that obedience to him was obedience to God and disobedience to him was disobedience to God.That one lies, for there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator, nor is it proper for the creature to have love for disobedience to God. Therefore, there is no obedience in disobedience to Him and no obedience to the one who disobeys God. Obedience is due to God, His Messenger (s.) and the commanders (a.). God commanded obedience to the Messenger (s.) because he is infallible and is kept pure by Him in a perfect manner. The Messenger (s.) does not command disobedience to God. He commanded obedience to the commanders (a.) because they are infallible and are kept perfectly pure by Him [Allah]. The commanders (a.) do not command disobedience to God.” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 139 Hadith 158]

حدثنا أبي رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن – محمد بن عيسى، عن أبيه، عن حماد بن عيسى، عن عمر بن أذينة. عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن سليم بن قيس الهلالي قال: سمعت أمير المؤمنين عليا عليه السلام يقول: احذروا على دينكم ثلاثة: رجلا قرأ القرآن حتى إذا رأيت عليه بهجته اخترط سيفه على جاره ورماه بالشرك، فقلت: يا أمير المؤمنين أيهما أولى بالشرك؟ قال: الرامي، ورجلا استخفته الأحاديث كلما أحدثت أحدوثة كذب مدها بأطول منها، ورجلا آتاه الله عز وجل سلطانا فزعم أن طاعته طاعة الله ومعصيته معصية الله وكذب لأنه لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق، لا ينبغي للمخلوق أن يكون حبه لمعصية الله فلا طاعة في معصيته ولا طاعة لمن عصى الله، إنما الطاعة لله ولرسوله ولولاة الامر، وإنما أمر الله عز وجل بطاعة الرسول لأنه معصوم مطهر، لا يأمر بمعصيته وإنما أمر بطاعة أولي الأمر لأنهم معصومون مطهرون لا يأمرون بمعصيته
