The best leaders (3:110)

,,You are the best nation, who have been brought forth for the people. You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong and believe in God and if the people of the Scriptures believed, it would be better for them. Among them are the believers and the majority of them are the transgressors.” [Al Imran 3:110]

كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر وتؤمنون بالله ولو آمن أهل الكتاب لكان خيرا لهم منهم المؤمنون وأكثرهم الفاسقون

Hammad Ibn Isa reported, that Abu Basir said: ,,Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq) read: ﴾You are the best leaders, who have been brought forth for the people.﴿” (3:110) [Al-Qira’at of As-Sayyari, page 30, Hadith 102]

محمد بن سنان عن حماد بن عيسى عن أبي بصير قال: قرأ أبو عبد الله عليه السلام كنتم خير أئمة أخرجت للناس

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,As for that which they falsified from the Scripture of God, that is His word: ﴾You are the best leaders.﴿ (3:110) For they falsified it to: ﴾You are the best nation.﴿” [Fasl-ul-Khitab of An-Nuri, page 244]

النعماني عن ابن عقدة عن جعفر بن أحمد بن يوسف بن يعقوب الجعفي عن إسماعيل بن مهران عن الحسين بن علي بن أبي حمزة عن إسماعيل بن جابر عن الصادق عليه السلام عن أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: وأما ما حرف من كتاب الله فقوله تعالى كنتم خير أئمة الآية فحرفت إلى خير أمة

Companions of Hammad Ibn Isa reported, that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,In the reading of Ali (a.): ﴾You are the best leaders, who were brought forth for the people.﴿” (3:110) He said: ,,They are the family of Muhammad (s.).” Abu Basir reported that He said: ,,This verse was sent down only for Muhammad (s.) and the representatives (s.). Thus He said: ﴾You are the best leaders, who were brought forth for the people. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.﴿ (3:110) So, by God, Gabriel (a.) came down with it and He meant none except Muhammad (s.) and his representatives (a.).” [Tafsir-ul-Ayyashi, Volume 1, page 195, Hadith 128 – 129]

عن حماد بن عيسى عن بعض أصحابه عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: في قراءة علي عليه السلام كنتم خير أئمة أخرجت للناس قال: هم آل محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وأبو بصير عنه قال: إنما أنزلت هذه الآية على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله فيه و في الأوصياء خاصة فقال: كنتم خير أئمة أخرجت للناس تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر هكذا والله نزل بها جبرئيل وما عنى بها الا محمدا وأوصيائه صلوات الله عليهم

Husain Ibn Muhammad reported, that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: ,,He who enjoined what is right and forbade what is wrong, he is the successor of God on earth and the successor of the Messenger of God (s.).” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il of An-Nuri, Volume 12, Page 179, Hadith 13817]

حسين بن محمد عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قال: من أمر بالمعروف ونهى عن المنكر فهو خليفة الله في الأرض وخليفة رسوله

Ni’matullah ibn Muhammad reported, that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said about the verse: ﴾You are the best nation﴿ (3:110): ,,How can this be this nation, when they have murdered the son of the Messenger of God (s.)? That is not how it was sent down and the way it was sent down is merely: ﴾You are the best leaders.﴿ By which He means the leaders from the people of the House (a.).” [Manba’-ul-Hayah of Al-Jaza’iri, page 67]

نعمة الله بن محمد بن عبد الله عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليه السلام في قوله تعالى كنتم خير أمة قال: كيف يكون هذه الأمة وقد قتلوا ابن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله ليس هكذا نزلت وإنما نزولها كنتم خير أئمة يعني الأئمة من أهل البيت عليهم السلام

Muhammad ibn Ziyad reported, that Abdullah ibn Sinan said: ,,One read the verse while being at Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq): ﴾You are the best nation, brought forth for the people.﴿ (3:110) Then Abu Abdillah (a.) said: ﴾The best nation murdered the Commander of the believers and Hasan and Husain, the sons of Ali (a.)?﴿ After that the reader said: ﴾My life be sacrificed to you. How then was it sent down?﴿ He said: ﴾It was sent down as: ,,You are the best leaders, who were brought forth for the people.” Do you not see the praise of God for them: ,,You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong and believe in God?﴿” [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 2, Page 92, Hadith 1]

علي بن إبراهيم عن إبراهيم بن هاشم عن محمد بن زياد بن عيسى عن عبد الله بن سنان قال: قرئت عند أبي عبد الله عليه السلام كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس الآية فقال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام خير أمة يقتلون أمير المؤمنين والحسن والحسين ابني علي صلى الله عليهم فقال القارئ جعلت فداك كيف نزلت قال نزلت كنتم خير أئمة أخرجت للناس ألا ترى مدح الله لهم تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر وتؤمنون بالله

Sa’d ibn Abdillah reported, that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said to the reader about the verse: ﴾You are the best nation, who were brought forth for the people. You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong and believe in God﴿ (3:110): ,,Woe to you. The best nation murders the son of the Messenger of God (s.)?” So he said: ,,My life be sacrificed to you, then how is it?” Then he said: ,,God sent down as: ﴾You are the best leaders.﴿ Do you not see the praise of God to them in His word: ﴾You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong and believe in God?﴿ (3:110) So His praise to them is an indication, that He did not mean the whole nation. Do you not know, that among the nation are lewd, highwaymen, unrighteous and transgressors? Do you mean then, that God praised them and called them as those who command the good and forbid the wrong? Not at all. God did not praise these and did not call them good, but they are the wicked.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 89, Page 60, Hadith 47]

جعفر بن محمد بن قولويه عن سعد بن عبد الله بن أبي خلف عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليه السلام في قوله عز وجل: كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر وتؤمنون بالله فقال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام لقارئ هذه الآية: ويحك خير أمة يقتلون ابن رسول الله صلوات الله عليه وآله فقال: جعلت فداك فكيف هي فقال: أنزل الله كنتم خير أئمة أما ترى إلى مدح الله لهم في قوله: تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر وتؤمنون بالله فمدحه لهم دليل على أنه لم يعن الأمة بأسرها ألا تعلم أن في الأمة الزناة واللاطة والسراق وقطاع الطريق والظالمين والفاسقين، أفترى أن الله مدح هؤلاء وسماهم الآمرين بالمعروف والناهين عن المنكر كلا ما مدح الله هؤلاء ولا سماهم أخيارا بل هو الأشرار

Ali ibn Abi Hamzah reported, that Abu Basir said: ,,I said: ﴾You were the best nation, who are brought forth for the people.﴿ (3:110) Then Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq) said: ﴾When were they the best nation, who are brought forth for the people?﴿ So I said: ﴾I do not know.﴿ Then He said: ﴾This verse was sent down only for Muhammad (s.) and his representatives (a.). Thus He said: ,,You are the best leaders, who are brought forth for the people. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.”﴿ Then He said: ﴾So Gabriel (a.) came down with this to Muhammad (s.). He meant none except Muhammad (s.) and his representatives (a.).﴿” [Al-Qira’at of As-Sayyari, page 32, hadith 114]

محمد بن علي عن ابن أسلم عن علي بن أبي حمزة عن أبي بصير قال: قلت كنتم خير أمة أخرجت للناس فقال أبو عبد الله عليه السلام: متى كانوا خير أمة أخرجت للناس فقلت: لا أدري فقال: إنما نزلت هذه الآية على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله فيه وفي أوصيائه خاصة فقال: أنتم خير أئمة أخرجت للناس تأمرون بالمعروف وتنهون عن المنكر ثم قال: نزل بها جبرئيل عليه السلام على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله هكذا فما عنى بها إلا محمدا صلى الله عليه وآله وأوصياءه صلوات الله عليهم
